Best BBQ in Phoenix
« on: April 05, 2018, 01:58:32 PM »

Good morning folks,

I'm heading down to Phoenix tmrw with the family and was wondering if anyone could recommend a great BBQ restaurant for us to try. Or any restaurant for that matter. We are staying at the Arizona Grand Resort (South Tempe I think) so something that would be a short drive from there. I prefer to stay away from big chain restaurants and like to find out where the Locals go...
Anyway, any tips are appreciated.

Take care.

I don't know that area very well so I am not much help.  I am 30 miles west of that hotel.

Rustler's Rooste is a steak/smoke house near the Arizona Grand Resort, but I haven't been there in a long time.  Cowboy steakhouse sort of theme.

Joe's Farm Grill & Joe's Real BBQ are in the east valley and have been on Dinners Drive Ins & Dives.  I have had several catered meals from them and it was very good. It was a favorite of the VP that I worked for and everyone on the team (20 guys) all really liked the catering so we kept going back to them every other month.
301 N Gilbert Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85234  If I lived closer I would be a regular at both of Joe's restaurants.

Bobby-Q is kinda north central Phoenix. A bit upscale from most BBQ joints.  8501 N 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85051  There is another location near the Biltmore Hotel, but I have not been that one.

Lucille's Smokehouse at Tempe Marketplace is pretty good, but it's a chain.

If you like spicy New Mexican food then I would consider Los Dos Molinos.  Most Mexican restaurants here are the basic Sonoran style and not overly interesting.
Google the names for more info.

HTH
ps... summer is here!  we are in the upper 90's next week.

Much appreciated.

Yea, we don't do cold that often, so it's shorts & flip-flops year round for us.  Maybe a mild freeze every 10 years, but nothing really cold.
Rustler's & Aunt Chilada's are both on the resort property. If you need a shopping mall, Arizona Mills is just on the NE side of the freeway from the resort.  Not that far and it has a Joe's Crab shack and the other mall stores.  Lots of retail in that area along the I10.

I just went out to get myself a "projects" refrigerator, I should have done that this early morning.   ;)

I recommend "Little Miss BBQ" which is 4 miles north of the Arizona Grand Resort.
This is competition quality BBQ, by far the best in Arizona as voted by the locals.

Back from Phoenix, had a great trip, sunny and hot for a week. Back to a white out snow storm today...

We ate a few places and ratings as follows:

Rustlers Roost - 6/10 food, 8/10 atmoshere
Joes Crab Shack - 7/10 food, 7/10 atmosphere
claim Jumper - 8/10 food, 8/10 atmosphere
Oreganos Italian - 9/10 food, 9/10 atmosphere, reminded me of Batistas Hole in the Wall in Vegas a bit...
Lobby Grill in Resort - 8/10 food, 9/10 atmoshere.

This is taking into account kids meals and kids responses to their experiences as well.

cheers,

Do they still cut off your tie? Can you still ride the slide in, at least I think that’s the place it was 15 years ago that we lived there.

Did you try the rattlesnake at Rustlers Roost? IMO, Oreganos is the best pizza joint in town.

Yes they still have the slide to go down. Had a great magician come to the table and did some amazing card tricks for the kids. A balloon guy cam as well and made some cool critters for the kids. And Horny the Texas Longhorn was out front...

Yes we tried the Rattlesnake, it was actually pretty good. My kids and wife tried it and all liked it too.

I would definitely hit up Oreganos again, best place we ate at when down there. It was maybe a 10 minute ride in a Uber.

the resort is great, set up good for the kids but its showing its age. I think they could do a better job at keeping the grounds cleaner but thats just me. Lots of leaves in the pools, lazy river etc.
Kids had a blast though. Food/drinks at the pool are very expensive but typical large portions so most meals would feed 2 kids easily.

Have a great time Darwin.
