My buddy was having temp issues with his Daniel Boone and GMG sent him a new controller and hot rod, didn’t fix the issue so they asked about his chimney.  He told them it was 1.5” open.  They told him to remove it when cooking at temps over 375.  He has started doing that and all has been well since.    Seems strange but it works I guess

The pit needs air. That is why there is a combustion fan. The cap is to keep rain out. Unfortunately, in most cases, it can be screwed down too far - even completely.
