What Foods Would You Like to See at a Tailgate?
« on: July 19, 2018, 08:28:42 AM »

We will be tailgating at the U of Minn/Fresno State game on Sept. 8.  Looks like not possible to have a pellet pit -- we may have a small, old charcoal grill. We are, obviously traveling and staying in a hotel, but will have ice chests so can bring things.  Some folks who are coming are a bit more local.

So, given these parameters, what foods would you enjoy at a tailgate?

Brats are a natural, IMO. With a little planning, you can stop at a local Walmart on the way to the stadium so you won't have to lug all the supplies around...... :2cents:

If you have a way to heat them - -
Brats.
Even the precooked are very decent.
A food that fits in very well at tailgates.

If you have a way to heat them - -
Calico beans.
Can be made ahead by someone. Great side dish to go along with brats
They certainly don't have to be hot by any means. They can go hot - room temp - or cold.
I eat the leftovers right out of the frig. YUM

Wings, pulled pork and brisket reheats nicely, can make nachos, tacos ect. out of it.

The only food you guys should have is iceberg lettuce with tap water for dressing!!  Since I won't be there, that is all that should be allowed. :P

If you have it in aluminum pans that are small enough to put on the charcoal grill, I would agree with you.

I know the Merediths and crew may not be able to do this, but this is what I have done my last few tailgates. I warmed up the food at my house, placed it in sealed aluminum pans, put in a cooler to stay warm.  When we arrived at the parking lot, we had the table setup and food on the table ready to eat within 10 minutes.  Most others in the parking lot didn't even have their charcoal lit yet.  I found it so comforting to be able to start the party right away and not have to worry about starting a fire, disposing of charcoal, waiting for a grill to cool before placing back in car, etc.  I guess it is possible to make the food in advance at the hotel and place in aluminum pans to take right to the tailgate.
