Cheaper usually is at the root of all modern changes to stuff.  Vary rarely do we get changes because they are actually better.

GMG is spinning it as better for consumer. Just listened to an interview with Jason from GMG and he's claiming that 12V motors are much more efficient in pellet consumption and also provide the obvious flexibility of being able to run the grill from a car battery, etc. He was even touting just making the DC change allowed them to easily put on a 'heavily requested' USB charging port ::). I never thought of needing to charge my phone from my grill...now maybe if I did comps on the other hand.

I can't understand how you can significantly decrease pellet consumption by going to a DC motor.   I've heard it said that they use 40% less pellets... I just can't believe that's even possible by somehow adjusting the way you feed the pellets or by how much you run the fan.   I'd be willing to eat crow if it turns out you can, but I am highly skeptical that this is possible.

Even if it is possible... what happens to the flavor of the food?   If they improve the efficiency by more than it already is, would there be any smoke output at all?

Either way, I'm very skeptical of the claim of 40% reduction in pellet use.

I guess if you can manage the air differently into the combustion chamber you could effect pellet consumption, but I am not sure how a AC/DC motor would make a difference with a combustion fan.

He was talking about being able to have finer control over the auger, so only dropping a couple pellets into the hopper versus a half turn or a full turn of pellets. Would that this would mean the fan might run less or at least slower too? Does it sense the quick increase from 10 pellets hitting the pot and speed way up where the increase won't be the same for dropping in smaller amounts and the the fan just runs slower? What will that mean for warm up times, smoke output, etc.  Lots of questions.

I don't buy it. I've seen pellet grills with AC auger motors feed a few pellets at a time,  so that just just sounds bogus.

The only thing I  could possibly believe,  would be lower airflow could reduce how much heat gets blown out,  and maybe this might cause lower pellet consumption. ( people have speculated that Yoder grills consume more pellets because of how much airflow they have)

Either way I'm still highly skeptical about claims of 40% lower pellet consumption

Probably not cheaper since we are given AC at the plug and have to use a half/wave or full/wave rectifier to turn it into useable DC.  However, that should not be prohibitive cost wise. I think that Traeger has been living (well) on their being the "original" pellet grill maker.  Good marketing. I think they are making a mistake with the very high prices on their new (models) because the competition is providing the same or more for far less.  IMHO. If I was going to spend $2500 I would be getting the all stainless Memphis.  You can PM me for more of my biased opinions.  Hope I did not break the rules.   :bbq:

As long as you are civil and don't post links to dealers and don't just rag on the manufacture to rag on them, you can posts all the biased commentary you want!

I see Traeger is hyping a product announcement on 3/15/2019.  They claim the new release will revolutionize the grilling game all over again.  We shall see.

For my money, the best of all worlds in the pellet game would be a PG500 with WiFi. I could not be more happy with mine as is. With WiFi, I think it would be unbeatable, except for those who want huge space. It's more than adequate space-wise for me. And with the grilling function, I don't even use my gasser anymore. Amazing pit.
