Why is the concrete floor so thick?  Wouldn't footings for the weight-bearing walls and a reduced-thickness floor work?

I've been thinking about this.  That guy isn't stupid so there must be a reason to construct it like that.  The only thing I can think of is that, now, all of that weight is supported by the floating slab floor and spread over what may be 50 square feet, rather than all of it bearing down on narrow footings.

I built one very similar to this but it was a kit so I didn't have to go brick by brick.  His was probably cheaper.  I truly miss that oven!
