Pre bought 4 tons of heating pellets and have 2 1/2 tons in the shed. We originally bought 3 tons but added a ton and they honored the original price. Today we will grab the last 1 1/2 tons and cover them up with a tarp. Costs us about 4.00 a day to stay warm. Hate to use the furnace but can if we have to, propane is about double the $ for the same heat. Big plus is the fireplace look.

When my wife retires we will probably move to the Hill Country and build a smaller house.  I want a pellet stove in every room because I really dislike being cold.  I can't imagine living anywhere north of Austin.  I guess y'all are hardier stock than I am!

Not sure where Hill Country is, however I can promise you that you won’t need one for every room. They put out the heat. We absolutely love it and we bought a cheap one.

It's west and north of San Antonio.  I have no experience with them, so I'm clueless to how well they work.  Of course, I'm clueless about a lot of things.  Just ask my wife.

Our house is pretty small. The living areas are right at 1400 sf. The 2 bedrooms add another 300 sf. but the way it’s laid out the stove heat has a little trouble getting there. When it gets really cold we just use a little electric heater in the bedroom. Otherwise it is very capable of “running you out” with heat.

Or if you want to get really crazy, there are companies that make pellet base boilers designed to drive either under floor heating, or wall mounted heat exchangers (similar to old time radiators).

Under the floor heating sounds intriguing!  I spent seven weeks in Ogdensburg NY in February and March of 2002.  I'd never seen snow that didn't melt when it hit the ground before, let alone drive in it.  Didn't enjoy the weather at all.  Most of the folks were nice though, even though they laughed at my inability to enjoy snow.

Wow, they do. I had no idea they made these. Pretty neat but I bet they are pretty expensive.

Back around 1990 we lived in rural Washington and our house had pellet central heat.

In looking at what is available now, I would have to say the system we had was about as crude as possible. It needed to be filled and cleaned a few times a week. But, it was much cheaper to run than propane.

I am getting prepared as well. I need to check and see if my furnace filter needs to be changed. I think we turned the heater on last winter.

Actually, we really did not use our heater much but that is because we have a couple of folks from Wisconsin living with us. They leave the windows open and my wife and I heap on extra covers.

But then, we prefer not use the air conditioner in the summer. Our Wisconsin guests prefer to have it on. It's all about what you are used to.
