I have a few friends that eat at BBQ joints all around there, we don't eat it out anymore.
I will reach out to a few of them and get their input.
Quick question, is he kind of a big name restaurant type guy or does he do the hidden hole in the wall type of places?
My help, knowing these guys is going to be probably none of the Jack Stack or Gates type of places, rather the 2nd option.

Two I already know of are Slapps BBQ and Brobecks.
Slapps was voted the best in KC, it is in between the Big boys and the hidden holes.
Brobecks on Roe is the hidden hole, the Carolina mustard sauce as I remember is fantastic.
Both have been a bit since we have eaten at them.

Bryant's and KC Masterpiece were two other big names that I remember from about 20 years ago when I was there.

We ate at Slaps on a cross country trip last year. We enjoyed it very much. I'm not a fan of KC beans - way too sweet for me and these were no exception. Would not order those again.

LC's was my favorite of the few I tried. Not the nicest place by any stretch, but great food when I had it. I barely ever use store bought sauce, but I ended up having a case of the LC's sauce shipped to my house when I got home.

I posted these about a year and a half ago and not much has changed except I would move Q39 up to second. Just all around great - except the beans are too sweet...

1) Joe's Kansas City - tied with #2 as my favorite
2) Jack Stack - more expensive but great
3) Smokin' Guns
4) Plowboys (in Blue Springs and now downtown)
5) LC's
6) Q39
7) Char Bar
8) and too many more to list!

Is there still one in an old gas station on the outskirts of town?  Or am I thinking of another city?

Bentley - the original Joe’s Kansas City is in an old gas station. LCs is in an old building near the stadium. Can’t think of any others in a filling station other than maybe a Zarda BBQ on the outskirts.
