Price gouging of pellets or an adjustment of pricing?
« on: March 27, 2020, 02:25:43 PM »

So I need to get some more pellets. I usually use Amazon to order from if my local sources do not have any.
My last purchase was Competition mix Louisiana grill pellets ( less than 2 months ago). My order for a 40# bag was $ 24.00 free shipping plus tax, total $25.98. Now the sellers want $40 or more a bag depending on the seller?
So are they price gouging or just making an adjustment to compete with others?

Now CookingPellet brand has only gone up from $38/40# to $41.58/40#

My wait time is at best maybe next week (maybe). All of my local sources around me are out of pellets.
This is crazy folks.

Shut downs have many unintended and unanticipated consequences.  Wonder if truckers will eventually just decide Cali isn't worth the hassle?

So I went to Louisiana Grill Website. Even though they are out of the Comp Pellets a #40 bag is only $30.00. I would guess there is some price gouging going on?

Traeger pellets are usually about $1/# so I don't see it being out of line with the so called market leader.

I agree, that is why I was asking if it is a price adjustment? My problem is that on LGs website they state a price and on Amazon now all of the third party vendors have jacked them up by a minimum of 30% or more. I did find one that had adjusted only a few dollars. Not 30+% though?

So here on Amazon you see third party shippers listing for down to$20plus and shipping. Starting in the $50+ plus shipping

Look at the shipping cost. If that is not price gouging I don't know what is. The last one on the list has a shipping price over $65

I did get one bag for normal price from Amazon on order after talking with them it will be a month out but that's okay.

So I think this scenario is playing out that many people may not be aware of.

Amazon has quit taking delivery of many good into their distribution system.  I suspect wood pellets is probably one of them.  Thus, if these vendors want to sell, they now must fulfill orders direct out of their warehouse and may have additional costs filling individual orders rather than one truck load order to an Amazon warehouse.  Thus, they probably have raised the retail price to cover the additional distribution costs to still be able to sell their products on the largest online retailer in the country if not the world.

Do you have any idea what it costs to ship a 40# box through USPS, UPS, or FedEx if you are shipping one package at a time?  Take a box to a local UPS store that weighs 40#.  I think you would be in for a surprise.

Hopefully, the popularization of pellet pits will cause more opportunities for local retail sales, and folks don't have to resort to mail order.

Price gouging has recently been made illegal here in Ontario Canada with heavy penalties for those who disobey.

I was lucky, I had bought 120 lbs from a co-worker who orders a pallet of them so right now I have at least 200 + lbs on stand-by

I won't mention the name, but the big online supplier of LumberJack is currently still running group buys, with prices to California around  $0.42/lb. That's only 1C more than I paid last year.
