Pellet Pro on Standby
« on: September 26, 2020, 03:50:57 PM »

Hey Pelletfans!

my 2.5 year old Pellet Pro controller is on Standby.  Red indicator light, and shows ambient temp.  No auger, no fan, haven't checked the hot rod yet, but assume it's not activating either.

I've got an email into Dennis, but I want to cook some ribs tomorrow.   I'm doing a burn off on my 10 year old rusty Traeger right now but would rather use my Pellet Pro Gator Pit.

Culprit, probably rain or WD-40.  I cleaned up the controller, nothing obviously wrong, fuse is fine, power is fine, but on standby and nothing happens.   I do see condensation or WD-40 behind the temp display.

Is there any way to reset out of standby mode?  Did I just destroy a $200 controller?  (I've left my pits outside year round for 10.5 years and never had this issue, I did just start cleaning with WD-40 is the only change.)

Thanks

-DK

Have you tried unplugging it, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in?
That may reset it.

she looks pretty rough, but the 20009 Traeger Texas is working fine after sitting for near a year without use.

I've unplugged the pellet pro, removed and checked the fuse, not seeing anything obvious.    I didn't see a reset button, so wondering if there is a ... push and hold these two buttons for 30 seconds to reset option or something.

I'd really rather not have to replace the controller that went from working perfectly, to Standby mode overnight.

You are right about that, it does look pretty rough.
For short term, you might want to scrape all loose rust/paint off it before using.
Having paint/rust flakes in you food would not be good.
For long term, scrape all rust/loose paint off, de-grease, clean thoroughly and hit it with some high-temp Rustoleum paint.

The nice good and bad with pellet pro is that they will update the controllers for life, the bad is you need to send it in. But they are quick. i bought a used one off of someone on the old PH site and when I was wanting to do a swap on my copperhead, i talked to Dan I believe it was at pellet pro he said to send it they would update and return it as it had an old version on it. I am in PA it was maybe a week till I got it back.

I never asked why they would need updated, I guess i figure if it worked with V X.X 3 years ago it should still work. Not sure.

Thanks Dave,

The manual was insightful.  I really wasn't stuck in standby mode.  I spoke with Dennis this morning, I seem to have some sort of short.  I'll get it in the mail to him today and let you all know the result.

PS the ole Traeger can still cook!   But much more scraping off rust and there won't be anything left.  My wife is a tad chagrinned that despite it sitting idle 360 days a year, it's times like these that we're glad to still have it  ;D

Smoke Daddy (Dan) says my controller is shot.  While we cannot be sure, probably the deluge shorted it out.   (I cover my pit from about Nov 1 - May 1, uncovered 100% the rest of the year rain or shine.)  They gave me a significant discount on a new controller that will be here early next week and I'll be back in business.

While Smoke Daddy has been fantastic, I have to admit, I've have had fun cooking on the old Traeger this week.  Spare Ribs, chicken, hamburgers and bacon so far.

to wrap this up.  I'm back in business.   Took just a few mins to connect the new controller and do a test fire.   Yesterday was dino ribs.   These were the best dino ribs I've purchased, but still don't match what I've had in Pecan Lodge in Texas.  For $43, I think I'll stick with Brisket.

Nice to be back in business.  As good as they look, those ribs are $$$!  Thanks for keeping us posted.
