Never experienced this.

It may have been produced by the food the animal ate.  Prairie chickens that feed on wild rose hips taste like liver, while those that have a different diet don't.  Northern deer taste vastly different from midwest deer that feed largely on farm crops, especially corn.

I agree.  Was it grass fed beef?

I can honestly say I've never had liver before, so I was wondering what liver would even be close to terms of taste.

Grass fed always has a metallic flavor to me.  Good theory!

I agree.  Was it grass fed beef?

Depends on the animal the liver is from, young or old and the skill of the cook.  A calf liver cooked by someone who knows how to cook it taste vastly different that a cow liver cooked by someone who doesn't -- at least in my book.  Don't like bovine liver that much but can eat my weight in pate foie gras!!!
