Rec Tec is supposed to be announcing a new grill on Friday. Photos and specs that hace been leeked or speculated on indicate it could be a kettle shape similar to a classic weber charcoal grill... temperature range was said to be 200-700F. I don't know for sure but it may actually be intended to fill the void you have described.  I guess the might be more information about it on Friday

I found that thread earlier this morning, that's a cool little grill, would be perfect for all my camping in the summer. At 55lbs it wouldn't be too bad loading into the back of the truck either. I'm glad to see mfrs expanding into the grilling segment, can't wait to hear how it works in the real world!

Fair question, for me when I say grill I am hoping to replace my gasser with pellets. That kind of grilling is burgers, dogs, steaks, sausages & kielbasa. Meat grilled on higher heat with char/sear. Typical week night fast cook after working all day & need to get food on the table for the family. Charcoal takes too long (according to the wife) so I fire up the Weber gasser & cook some protein while sides are being made in the kitchen. I’d love to have one great pellet grill that can do it all, quick weeknight meals cooked over wood & then long smokes on the weekend.

To me, all you need is a unit that will "truly" get 500° or hotter.  These were all done on such units, either a Daniel Boone or a Memphis Pro...Would you call these samples grilled?  They were all done in under 30 minutes from time the pit was turned on to the time they went on a plate.

Yep, those are grilled for sure. I’m going to give steaks a shot this weekend on the Camp Chef & see how it goes while the search continues. That new Rec Tec looks pretty cool, read a long thread on the LG Champion& it sounded positive to me. Of course while I really don’t need the Champ how can you not admire it for sheer size alone!

Err, pellet grills still take time to heat.  My Yoder I wouldn't use for 20 min to cook on.  My Weber takes 20 min for the charcoal to get hot.  Charcoal is a lot cheaper too.

Anything above 300 degrees F. That's my definition anyway, and can be direct or indirect.

That very much depends, I think a 40# bag of pellets lasts at least if not longer than a 20# bag of charcoal, especially in my insulated pit.   For me a bag of pellets costs about the same as a bag of charcoal so I feel pellets are actually cheaper.

Depends on the grill.    Close to 1000 degrees is plenty hot, I’ve not yet had anything I wanted to grill at the max temp my grill will achieve.

And this is why I showed the photos, stated the temperatures and said how long it took to cook all of them. 

You don't want to do it on your Yoder, no problem. 

Other units get hotter, yeah, so what?

If it meets your definition of grilling, use it, if it doesn't, use something else.  My pellet units grill fine!
