Growing up in the 70's we had a built in gas grill with the lava rock that would burn everything. I the 80"s I convinced my Mom to buy a Weber kettle. I cooked everything on that! In the 90's my brother introduced me to the WSM. Then I traveled for work from Chicago to Memphis every week for 2 years. It became my mission (obsession) to reproduce good BBQ at home. The real deal! In 2000 I bought a Traeger and never looked back. The consistency of temperature improved my cooking from the get go.

Growing up in MN there really isnt BBQ, just grilling.  Before I joined a former pellet site about 10 years ago, I was trying to look up ways to cook ribs.  After reading for some time I went and got a pellet smoker and have been doing it since

Forgot about the"lava rock" in the gassers. It was so high maintenance...   The early days of the gasser somewhat parallel those of pellet cookers. Both have come a long way.

Camping with burnt everything if it wasn't on a metal plate.
Little Chief smoker that was a 1st class creosote smoker. What else can ya do with smelt?
Gasser one that lasted a year.
Gasser 2 with lava rocks that lasted a year, Burning that off would call the fire dept.
Gasser 3 with ceramic disks; not much better. 2 year life span.
Looong break during the divorce.

Weber 18.5" WSM. Lasted about 3 years but still have for power outages. Lump coal in the shed.

Treager Jr Elite that I've had for 4 years. Haven't cooked in the oven since. The electric bill has gone down by about 25% in that time frame.

I'm sure I'm missing something along the way, but gassers and charcoal are a thing of the past to me. Electric smokers went the way side when the Little Chief did.  :puke:

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I have always enjoyed cooking, when I was in college I started doing more once I got out of the dorms. My aunts and uncles told my wife to be that I was a good cook. However that did not materialize as I only cooked for her 1 time in 30 years of marriage. Then the Mrs had a nasty fall and shattered her leg, which placed the cooking duties squarely upon my shoulders, then I happened upon a GMG and found the PH website and Mr. Bentley! Now I am still 'bit' by the bbq bug and am regularly found outside in the midst of smoke working up another tasty dish for family and friends. oh, by the way, my GMG little green book is still used only I have no binding left to hold the pages together.

I've always enjoyed Grill cooking. I had a Grill similar to the one in Bentley's picture I inherited from my Grampa. I used to throw wood in it & cook like that. Then on to gassers. Got tired of replacing them every 2 years bought the Traeger........
