Do You Compete in Sanctioned BBQ Competitions?
« on: December 17, 2017, 09:36:36 AM »

It was hard to tell on PHs as to how many people competed.  Bent and I use to guess that it was less than 5%.   The number of members on this forum is a lot smaller and more current, so thought I would take a crack at a poll and see what the numbers are.  I am only talking about sanctioned events, not backyard or neighborhood contests.

Sadly no, I only dream I am capable.
Wish I had taken up a few offers in the past to participate but just didn't.
Sounds fun as heck though.

I did for several years until work got in the way! And had a blast doing it.

Have never competed. Only been smoking foods for about 2 1/2 years. Just finished my masters, so my time was limited. I would like to try my hand just to see where I stand. I know my food is good, but with competition comes bragging rights, there are some downright awesome cooks out there.

Neighborhood and church events only.   No real interest in sanctioned.  I think Riverrat is a comp guy, but I don't see much interest in the PNW.  I suspect our most famous BBQ resident is Lynnae Oxley.

Did a couple Pellethead comp's here in Wisconsin a few years ago. Met a few folks from here there it was fun, Haven't done any since. I wonder whatever happened to the GB Pellet Fan who put those on.

Good question, remember having dinner with both of you at Lambeau Field after the 2010 AR!

I might if there was an event in the area..There used to be The Canadian BBQ championships. That fell thru the cracks a few years back. Too bad as it was excellent by me.

BM,
You've always been very cordial with inviting members to stop by and stick their noses in when you are on the road competing.
I've not done that as yet, but I'd sure like to somewhere down the road.

Only at the Royal (2010, 2012, 2015) and one other with Trooper, Phrett & West Allis.
Would prefer to keep it on an infrequent basis.  Hoping to cook with my good friend Trooper before too long where he and I do all 4 meats.

I hung out with the Pelletheads at the 2015 Royal.  Cooked with a different team at the 2016 Royal.  Then went all in this year, on my own.  I ended up doing 9 KCBS competitions this past summer.

Competition BBQ is a whole different game.  Part of it is learning and adhering to the "standards" that KCBS judges expect to see in a box.  Part is tweaking your flavor profile so that it appeals to almost anybody.  And part of it is consistently cooking it EXACTLY right so that it is perfect when the judges.  It is certainly a game of inches and is quite eye opening when you first get started.

I agree with you here.

That is a fairly humble way of saying I was on the team and my potato entry finished 42 with a score or 170.26 and along with GrillinGlen's 24th and 173 in beans and Kristin's 11th and 174 in Vegetable the 3 of us finished 6th overall in Sides with a 517.64.  The highest sides finish Pelletheads.com had in its 6 years at the American Royal.

I hung out with the Pelletheads at the 2015 Royal.
