Need New Remote Temperature System (Maverick Like)
« on: August 28, 2017, 03:17:47 PM »

I think I bought my last Maverick in 2011...I just threw my last Maverick in the trash.  That is not to say I do not like Mavericks, I do...they just all wore out, and it seems like it was all the transmitters, I have 3 receivers that work fine.

So I need one, maybe 2 new units.  Obviously we are trying to fill the site with content so you all will stick around.  You all have probably bought units since 2011 and I would like to hear what they are and a ball park price if that is not to intrusive.

What I thought I would do, if there are any suggestions, is list them in a poll, ask you all to vote on the one you would like to see reviewed and I can kill 2 birds with one stone.  Get the equipment I need and maybe do a Product Review too!

So if you have suggestions, and it does not have to be something you own, maybe you would like to see a review of a product you were thinking of buying?  Can't say it will be the one chosen, but it can be in the voting.

Now, I have both a Stoker and a Tappecue, I really do not want the web based stuff, more the Maverick, sit 40 feet away from me on patio by pit type unit.  And as many of you know I am a cheap screw, so around $50 or less would be the ticket, I could see maybe going to $100, but I guarantee that is the limit and it would have to be very special...Can ya help me?

1. ThermoWorks Smoke. (5) $99.00 (Bad timing, just missed sale)
2,  GrillEye (1) $88.20
3. ThermoPro TP08 Wireless (1) $47.99
4. Dansrue Wireless Remote  (1) $28.99
5. VENSMILE Meat Thermometer (1) $16.98

Nope, can't help.  I use my Rock's Stoker.  I get real-time temperature readouts (six plugs) and real-time graphing.  My Mavericks are collecting dust.

I have limited background with hi-end thermometers, my limit is the Smoke.   It was a splurge and I'm sure a review would be most welcome.

If I didn't have a Tappecue and Rock's Stoker plus a few Maverics I'd got for the Thermoworks Smoke.

They ain't cheap, but... Fireboard , is one really nice device.  6 probe ports, cloud based graphing and data collection... some ability to access via Bluetooth when local.  What sold me most on these units, is their ability to read and record data up to 750F, as far as I know they are the only ones that do this.  Probes are built pretty well... so far, haven't had a single issue with one, and I even accidentally too one up over 800F.    I bought their 'extreme' addition and had it customized for my own desires... I  bought it with 6 ambient probes, and 2 food probes.   Why??  because I rarely really want to monitor the temperature of more then one or two hunks of food, but I do love to play around testing grills and such, and for me, knowing the pit temperature is more useful to me then knowing what many different hunks of food temperatures are.

But anyway...  I do also have a iGrill 2, and it's OK, love the graphing on it, but you almost have to dedicate a Android device to using with it if you really want the nice graphs.

Smoke looks like a nice product, and I'm sure it is built really well... but if you really want WiFi, by the time you buy the smoke and the WiFi thing, your up at the cost of a Fireboard, and since the Fireboard has 6 ports compared to 2 on the Smoke... well, for me the Fireboard is the better option...

If I didn't want graphing or WiFi... that $76 on the Smoke is looking like a great deal. I have very little doubt that Smoke is built and designed much better than any other point to point wireless remote thermometer system...

So after a little research, I see my computer does have Bluetooth, I guess that opens up a whole lot more options!

It may have bluetooth but the software is only written for iOS, Android and sometimes Windows Mobile.  I think it's time to buy a cheap android phone!

A cheap android tablet may be better.  You could also connect it to your wifi in your house if you have that too.
