Years ago my sister-inlaw had told me something along the lines of the membership fees being a big source of profit... I found it hard to believe... Still am kinda skeptical of it being true.

What a membership is like $50 a year?   Hard to believe they don't make more then $50 a year from purchases made by the average member.

I have never been to a Costco. It really bothers me to pay someone for the privilige of shopping there. Never was a big fan of Sam's Club either (but that's a different story). A few years back they opened one about 25 miles away, so I keep thinking maybe I should give it a try. Is there a way to figure out at what point actually save more than you've spent on the membership card? Also, I see a lot of people buy their meat there. Is the quality and price better there than elsewhere?

If you are asking about the quality of the Beef at Costco, price is about the same as Wal-Mart or insert your grocery store... But I have never encountered USDA Choice anywhere that is better, most other places are not even comparable for me.  Most of the time their gas is 7-10 cent/gal cheaper.  If you lived close enough to one that had gas, depending on how much you buy a year, it might pay for the membership.

(Teaching moment for you all for me...Costco is not a person...so it is not their gas, right?  It is there beef?)

“Their” is still the right word.

I know I am probably the most ignorant person on this site when it comes to grammar & spelling, only way I know how to learn is ask...Or continue to post the way I do and really show my lack of education.

It really depends on what you buy. Some stuff is way cheaper, and some things are just larger quantities. I guarantee I save more than the membership costs in the first 3 months of each year. Some of the big savings for me are:

Cheese
Zip lock bags
Bottled water
Toilet paper
Foil
Foil pans
Certain seasonings
Nutri grain breakfast bars
Dishwasher tabs

Like Bentley mentioned, meat is better quality more than better price.

Captain Morgan is always 19.99, so that is a few dollars savings every couple weeks....many times I walk out with raw beef and a bottle of captain Morgan. That's a good day in my book.

And if you sign up for the executive membership you can get a % back.  Couple that with their Costco Visa and you can get even more.  We usually end up with $200+ each year.  I suppose that means we shop there too much....

Softener salt
Milk
Detergent
Some electronics

I have over $400 coming back for last year.  The store is only 3.5 miles from my house, so I (we) shop there often.  Only stuff we don't buy is things that come in too big a unit.  i.e. cases of fruit, gallons of condiments.  I also bought some tires, and furniture this year.  The local Reasor's gets the rest of the business.  Costco Gas is 4 cents cheaper/gallon.  Plus you get 4% back on that as well.  Heck I might just get a camper and move to their lot.

And don't forget, on any given day, you can cruise through their aisles and eat a meal for free. [ Invalid Attachment ]   Well, maybe not cruise but bull your way through.  I often get accused of cart rage.  I've actually even had the cart taken away from me.    But I digress.

Precisely why I DO NOT go on weekends. I typically go at lunch during the week, and there are only a handful of others in the store. I loathe crowded stores with carts everywhere. Same deal for Kroger marketplace by my house. Night time during the week only for me. Literally every 2 seconds, "sorry, excuse me."  "sorry, excuse me". One of the worst new trends seem to be children's carts. They are mini versions of the real thing. Most adults can't even navigate a store properly, then they hand over a mini version to their rugrats who promptly just park them right in the center of the aisle. Or worse go kamikaze at 30 mph from one end to the other.

Man do I sound old and crabby. Just turned 40...

Some of the freebies are good and some are not.
But it allows you to skip a meal now and then.

I was cruising the Costco aisles one sunny afternoon and dodging people/carts and came around one corner and entered a narrower aisle with a cart/woman/child and the cart was sideways right in the middle of the aisle.   She and the child were about 10 ft down the aisle so I not so gently rammed the front of the cart to turn it away  and get by.  The woman grabbed the kid and said "c'mon jr, get out of the the man's way".  I told her, "the kids not the problem".   Got my cart taken away again. I frequently wish they had a bar at the entrance of the store.  A couple adult beverages would help me deal with the many inconsiderate people who behave as you described. I find it best to go first thing in the morning or just before closing time during the week.
