Coast to (almost) Coast
« on: January 20, 2018, 03:29:25 PM »

My son's doing a 6 month internship in Georgia and I'll be driving out there with him from CA. Taking I40 and looking for some good BBQ and other eats along the way. Probably stopping around

Albuquerque
Amarillo
OKC
Memphis
Nashville
Atlanta

Any 'Can't-Miss' food stops in those cities or in between is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cant help with BBQ but 2 of the best Chicken Fried Steaks I have ever had...Been 14 years and 5 years respectively, so things can change, but if they are the same...2 of my top 3 of all time.

#1 Calico County Restaurant, 2410 Paramount Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79109 about 1/4 mile off I-40.   About 40 miles east of OKC...#3 Delta Cafe in Shawnee, OK, right off I-40.

Rudy's Country Store & Bar-B-Que 2321 Carlisle Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110 again, about 5 years ago and at that time, not sure why we would have chosen BBQ...I think very tired and right next to motel I think...I could eat it, and for me and BBQ, that is almost like saying it was 5 Star!  Sausage real good!

If you stop at any of them, I sure hope you will take some pictures and tell me what you think!  At these or any of the places you eat at!

The Varsity is somewhat unique in Atlanta if you like chili dogs!

Great ideas. CFS is one of our favorites so we'll definitely try to stop at one of those in TX or OK. Heard good things about Rendevous and Gus's. We'll take pics!
Thanks everyone.

Fox Brothers in Atlanta is excellent. Also I really enjoy Martin’s in Nashville. Several locations.

I've been to a Rudy's in Houston area and the jalapeno smoked sausage was great.  You can add the Germantown Commissary to your list for Memphis area.  I would skip Corky's though.  Rendezvous usually has a bit of a wait to get seated.  Depending on when you go it could be over an hour.  20 years ago, there was a place in Memphis named Cafe Roux that had some good New Orleans type foods.  Not sure if it is still around or not.

Just had dinner at the Rodizio Steak House in Nashville last Evening.  Nice experience and good eats..

https://www.rodiziogrill.com/

Located along the downtown strip, can catch some of the nightlife (or day life), along with some history of the area..

Note:  The Rhyman Auditorium ( https://www.opry.com/ ) is about a block or two away, easy walking distance, if you would like to catch a show.

Been meaning to try her place, but haven't yet.
Friends rave about it.
The Horn Lake location is not far off 40, suburban Memphis.

That is a crying shame to lose a place that makes that good a CFS, but if the one in Amarillo is still open, and half as good as it was in 2003, you will enjoy it!

Remind me when you come to MN for the Fresno State game, there is a dive bar we can take you to that is notorious for good chili dogs.

Thanks again to everyone for the tips. A long drive and tight deadline did not allow us to visit too many of the suggested sites but we hit a few.

The first was Calico County in Amarillo. My son and I are both big on CFS and Calico did not disappoint.  We got there around 4PM and not surprisingly the place was pretty empty at that time. I ordered the large CFS plate with mashed spuds and fried okra. The breading on the CFS was perfect, flavorful and crunchy. The steak was tender, but not mushy. Nick ordered the catfish plate, 1/2 pan fried and 1/2 deep fried and both were delicious.  Of the sides, the green beans were my favorite - not much to look at but outstanding flavor - really smoky.  Service was fast and friendly.

In Memphis, we got into town just in time to make it to the Fedex Center for the Spurs vs Grizzlies game.  Coming from Oakland where good Warriors tickets can cost at least $500, it was nice to be able to get 12th row seats in the first level for $42!   Rendezvous has a few concessions at the arena so we tried their pulled pork nachos. These were the best nachos I've ever had, and maybe the best stadium food ever as well.

The next day we walked over to Central BBQ (Downtown) and split a BBQ Rib plate with brisket and sausage.
The ribs were outstanding. Baby backs with a really nice dry rub, perfectly tender and very moist. In my experience, back ribs being so lean are usually not this moist. Note that they did leave the membrane on. The BBQ sauce on the table was also perfect, spicy with a good vinegar bite and not very sweet. I should have bought some to take with.
The sausage was also excellent - very smoky and juicy.  This was the first time I've had Memphis brisket. It was sliced very thin and not super tender - probably would not pass pull test. Also not very smoky. Not sure if this is indicative of Memphis style or not. It was good, but I prefer Texas style

For dinner we went to Flying Fish downtown. I had the catfish poor boy and a bowl of gumbo and he had the fried oyster poor boy. Thumbs up for everything.

Didn't make it to Nashville or Atlanta. He's working just north of Macon, so on my last night we went a bit upscale and ate at a place in Forsyth GA called Gritts Café.  I had the double-thick smoked pork chop served on top of mac&cheese with fried green tomatoes, and he had the blackened salmon.  Good food, and nice beer and wine list and cocktails as well.
