Chili, Beans or no Beans
« on: January 29, 2018, 08:59:52 PM »

All the talk about Cincinnati Chili got me thinking.

I like beans in my chili.

So who else does? Or does not?

If you have a recipe to share, please post it.

Looking for some good ideas.

Nope, no beans. If there are beans then it must be referred to as "chili beans".

I like chilli with or without beans.  As a general rule Never in Texas (diced chuck / brisket) chilli, but it's ok in ground beef chilli.

I've always used beans; the family enjoyed the flavor and it helped the meal go further. With hungry kids it seemed there was never enough.

Prefer none typically, and definitely not kidney beans. If I make southwest style chili I will add some black beans, but that's about the only kind.

It depends.  If on a chili dog, chili hamburger or chili cheese fries, no beans.  If a bowl to eat with Fritos, beans.

I like true Texas Chili which has no beans.
I like chili (no beans) on hamburgers and hot dogs.

I'm a self professed Chili snob... and IMHO the answer is clear.   Chili is meat and hot peppers( along with some other spices)... beans are filler and technically not allowed in real chili. Tomatoes have become a acceptable part of chili as well, but I usually use them sparingly.

I do make chili with beans sometimes...   I've even been known to add some small chunks of potato too... However I do see these for what they are... filler and not truly a integral part of Chili itself.

I thought they were fond of pasta in the stuff they call Chili in Cincinnati ? ( I missed that discussion I guess )

I think in another life , I was a Texan -  I like my Brisket and Chili the way real Texan's would have them...

( seriously I've spent a lot of time learning about Chili lore and such, it's kind of a passion of mine, but do actually enjoy a wide variety of things that I don't really consider to be the true Chili , but resemble it in some ways.  However I've been known to make fun of people who bring chili with beans in it to a 'chili cookoff')

By the way... if you want authentic 'chili' sauce used on what some in my home town claim to be the original Coney Island... here's a recipe ( look , no beans )

Much like others, if the chili is intended to be eaten in a bowl with a side of cornbread, I like my chili with beans. If the chili is supposed to be on a hot dog or burger, no beans. In no uncertain terms should pasta be in my chili. :puke:

I like both, but the ones with beans aint chili...I also like real roasted chili's in mine and that I am sure is a no-no as I believe that is all powder with the traditionist!  And finally someone knows how much onion and the correct chop on a chili dog.  An no cheese... :puke:

And for those who have experienced Wienerschnitzel in the West, Der preceding that if you are over 50...Many will laugh at me...Best chili dog chili I have ever had...a brown glop that I loved!
