What are you smoking on?
« on: August 31, 2017, 11:19:57 AM »

Not everyone includes their arsenal in their signature so - what are yall cookin on?

My brother is the one that got me into pellet grills.  2 years ago he asked if we could split a grill that could live at my house, I said sure.  He had done a lot of research and wanted to get a GMG DB.  I saw a cheaper Traeger at Costco and wanted to get that... he persuaded me to spend the extra money and so we bought our GMG DB (with wifi).  He came over a few times to use it but I was cooking on it weekly.  I later added the internal wire shelf, Traeger folding front shelf, better antenna, Don Godkes downdraft, GMG pizza oven and added a temperature gauge to the lid.

While I would love a more expensive smoker like a MAK or Memphis Pro or Cookshack... the DB and I have produced amazing results and I like being able to monitor it from my phone.

I also have a GMG DB but, it's just an old Plain Jane non Wi-Fi model that I'm very happy with.

The first pit that I owned all by myself was the GMG Daniel Boone.  It is stored right now because we only keep one pit on the patio and that is the Memphis Pro.  I love my DB, it is so easy to use.  I think if more women knew about pellet pits they would flock to them.  So easy to set temps and know they will hold, no messy charcoal or spending time getting a fire going, yet a real wood cooking experience.

I also have a special place in my heart for GMG and David Baker.  They were the first company to send a pellet pit for performance testing to PH.  Pellet pits were pretty new to most of the bbq community and PH was a pretty unknown site with no track record of performance evaluations.  David did not know either Larry or Bentley and had no idea if Bent would be fair or objective in his testing.  But I think he believed in his product and I have always remembered that attitude and it was why I bought the DB.  And it is still a pit we cook on at competitions, a real little workhorse.

You should post some pictures and cooks in the Yoder section TLK so folks will know who to ask questions of about Yoder.  You have a very nice area in your yard for the smoker.

I haven't used it since this new site was formed and didn't just want to post old stuff.  Hopefully there will be a cook in there soon.

Still consider my Fast Eddy PG500, my best all around pellet grill... but I must say , it's been pretty lonely since I got my little Davy Crockett a month or two ago.     Then of course I still have my small fleet of Traegers, just for ... well I don't know, maybe I figure I'd never be able to get any money out of them, but also, sometimes it's fun to fire one up , just to see that it still works.

I will list them in order of purchase.

Traeger XL - Hasn't been used for 2+ years, but will probably get fired up this weekend once I get it on the patio.
Memphis Elite - This has become my low and slow cooker.
MAK 2 Star - This is my multi purpose cooker.
Blazin Grand Slam - This has become my chicken wing cooker and other small things before or after the wings are on.

I also have a Weber Spirit that has all stainless guts and is about 7-10 years old that i haven't used in about 5 years.  I did fire up on first push of the ignitor a month or so ago when I hooked up a propane tank to it.  May throw something on it one of these days.

My 1st Pellet Pit, bought in 2002, sold in 2007.  Never did take a photo when I 1st got it, was not a camera person, and if there was digital at that time, I could not afford it!  Bought a 2nd 075 to compete in 2004, sold in 2009.

My 3rd Pellet Pit, Country Smoker WholeHog bought in 2007, sold in 2013 when we moved to Mayberry!  Never liked the height after the pneumatics were added, so I chopped it and removed doors!

4th Pit was a Memphis pro in 2010...Still have it!  Was the 1st Memphis Pro to ever have Competition Wheel package!

And my 5th Pit was a 2010 Daniel Boone...Still have it!

You had the whole hog until you moved cross country? I thought that thing was long gone.

Have had a GMG Daniel Boone going on it's 3rd season. Just recently added the front Corian shelf.  16" x 23" x 3/4" piece of Corian has some weight to it.
