I could do without the stock market volatility. Maybe work behind the scenes instead of announcing all your thoughts on Twitter.

I've heard that 2/3rds of US Soybean production is sold to China. Heard they were considering tariffs on soybeans too...

I somehow doubt that any other country could easily step in and produce that many soybeans...   I also doubt that China would be willing to impose these tariffs for long, if it meant they were going to have to pay a lot higher prices for soybeans, pork, etc...

It's all a dance... I'm not really a Trump supporter, but I have no problem at all with his trying to get tough on trade imbalance with China.

Regarding soybeans here are some comments from a grain commentary that I follow:

"The efficiency of the cash markets was on display over the past 24 hours.

China waited until their Dalian exchange was closed to put out their tariff announcement.

FOB values ex Brazil exploded, jumping from 120 over for May to trading at 180 for May and 190 for July.

Cash traders who had FOB Brazil bot with non China destination quickly swapped out and put at least a dollar

in their pocket. Sold Brazil and bot US. Not bad on a 2 mil bu panamax.

My contact in Brazil tells me they bot A LOT of beans from their farmers yesterday and the most interesting comment:

Cash traders in Brazil were contacting US shippers trying to buy US beans.  At a 1.10 to 1.20 discount they can figure out

how to make the US beans still work. Anyone think this tariff stuff will work?  Anyone think that US origin beans that are bot by

Brazil traders won't somehow find their way into China - maybe with Brazil stamped documents?"

Only time will tell what prices will actually do but for right now I think this a just a ploy to get the Chinese to the table to talk about balancing the trade deficit. I'm really hoping this will not actually go into effect but that negotiations are had and new agreements made that benefit the US as well as China. In the mean time prep for the worst and hope for the best.

The steel and aluminum tariffs went into effect last week. The immediate response from US steel manufacturers was to raise their prices.

What does this mean to the average US consumer? Higher prices. In no way is this a 'leveling' of the playing field. It's simply an excuse for the rich to get richer. The US isn't concerned about being equal. If we were, the domestic manufacturers wouldn't raise their prices proportionally.

The government doesn't care about Joe citizen. Has your income or old age benefits kept up with the economy?

Never has an imposed tariff resulted in a more level playing field. it's Always an excuse for raising prices. Higher prices means more tax dollars for the government. It is that simple. It is planned for that reason.

Well, I see that the White House just announced 12 BILLION in aid to farmers, with the acknowledgment that most of that will go to aid producers of soybeans which have been hit hardest by the Chinese tariffs.  So whether pork gets cheaper, our deficit gets bigger as we assist those affected by tariffs in order to keep them a float (and secure their vote I am sure).  Eventually someone will want to tax me to pay for it.

I would really like to stop "winning" for a while.

Nothing like making someone else pay for the crisis you created.

Yes the sad part is companies who are hit by these tariffs are already starting to lay people off. Some are even moving production overseas to avoid tariffs which means less jobs in the US. In the end it will effect all of us.

At my company, the metal tariffs have wiped out gains from the corporate tax cut.

We will try to claw some back with price increases but at the end of the day that gets passed down to the consumer.

Trump is doing exactly what he said he would do.

I hope we can all quickly realize how dumb a trade war is and quietly go back to the way things were before we lose anymore jobs.

The reality is that soy may never come back from this. Between China buying from Brazil now, Australia picking up some of the demand and China focusing on growing more domestically, the US soy farmer may find themselves left out in the cold.

The economy is doing great and unemployment is low, why put it at risk with a trade war?  It's completely unnecessary.

Trump Secures Concessions From Europeans, EU Official Says

The European Union delegation meeting with President Donald Trump Wednesday agreed to a few concessions to avoid a fully-blown trade war with the U.S., according to a European official in the room.

The official said European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and his top trade official Cecilia Malmström agreed to work with the U.S. administration to lower industrial tariffs on both sides, increase LNG exports and soy beans to Europe, and align regulatory standards to allow for medical devices to have better market access in Europe, the official said.

So does this mean he isn't giving farmers 12 Billion Dollars?  Cuz I guess the EU is going to have to buy a lot of soybeans. ::)
