Bentley said the s word...

Don't get me wrong; I really do like Spam. But the salt content even in the low sodium version is too much for me. And... it's Expensive! So I made the switch to Dak ham. It's fully cooked and tastes like ham. I've no idea what makes up a can of Dak.
My guess would be leftover pork from butchering (and maybe some meat glue)?  Don't know, don't care.  :pig:

It's a must have for any preppers because it's so versatile and has a good shelf life. $4 bucks per 16 oz can at WallMart makes it pretty cheep (free 2 day shipping on orders $35 or more). I use it anywhere one would use regular ham. Crackers and cheese, cubed in a salad, rolled up in a tortilla with rice and salsa, fried, diced - fried and added to cream of shroom and poured over pasta... You get the idea.

Youtube makes fun of it and it does make me chuckle. None of these boneheads were ever faced with a hunger issue or grew up poor. Oh well...

I buy 10 cans at a time (free shipping  :)). I will open 6 of them, and add rub to both sides. That's about all the space my bottom dwelling Jr will comfortably accept. I could do all 10 but it would be cramped. Since it's already cooked, I just put them on frogmats and let them roll on smoke mode for 2-3 hrs. Then it's into the fridge for cool down, and vac sealed and frozen.

To give the 'tubers' credit, a freshly opened can does contain some gelatinous tissue, but that has never bothered me. Smoking will render that out and yield a pretty firm product about 75% of the initial weight.

Try a can.

I cannot argue the sodium content, I don't even know it.  I think it is expensive too, but it is about .35 cents/oz and your Dak is .25 cents/oz so not to far out of line in price...

I used to love spam as a kid, a teenager, and even into my 20s as a student.

Nowadays I can't abide it. I'm not sure if it is me, or whether the (uk-manufactured) spam has changed.

I remember it as actually having a texture - of meat - and a good flavour, if a little salty. The last can I tried was salty, but otherwise tasteless, and could be mashed with a fork. Even the jelly was flavourless.

Spam's handy on camping trips 'cause it doesn't need refrigeration and one can is enough for two people's spam & egg breakfasts.  It's a little heavy for backpacking and makes heavy carry-out.  But anyone who lumped a pack in SE Asia will think it's a walk in the park.

The Wolfe Pit has a youtube video about making homemade Spam. Been on my to do list for awhile. Just haven't gotten around to it. Seems like a fun experiment though.

I don't think I have ever tried it.  I asked my Wife says she had it when she was a kid.  Her report it is it "congealed salty fat".

Now I gotta try it ;D

I love bologna, but absolutely despise Spam. My dad loved the stuff.

I'm back.

Spam is best for breakfast - fried well.
Love it with eggs over easy - VERY runny!
Use the fried Spam to swab up the egg & membrane left on your plate.

I'm with Trooper, fried to a crisp, eggs over easy and swab up the yolk with spam.   Especially now since I'm off the bread for a while so can't swab up with toast. :lick:

I purchased a couple cans of Spam a few years back to try out as I had never tasted it before.  I fried up a slice as that seemed to be a popular method of cooking.  One bite and I tossed everything into the trash.  Way too much salt for me and I didn't care for the texture.  Now I do love a good fried bologna & yellow mustard sandwich every now and then.   :lick:

Like I said, folks seem to love it or hate it!  To me, Spam has a much better texture then Bologna!
