Keeping track of recipes using free software
« on: September 05, 2017, 07:57:24 PM »

One thing I've always had problems with is keeping track of all the great recipes I find on the Internet. Some sites allow you to keep a recipe book, and of course, there are entire recipe sites. However, I find recipes just about everywhere I go, and it is difficult to record them into a single location. Although I'm not particularly a Microsoft fan, they have made one of their Office applications free for everyone to use. If you currently use MS Office, they you likely already have it. The program is called OneNote and is a blank slate for keeping an electronic notebook, much like MS Word is a blank slate for writing documents. I use Firefox as my browser, and one of the addons available is called OneNote Clipper (also free), which allows you to clip almost any page you see on the Internet into your OneNote notebook.

I married the two together - OneNote and the OneNote clipper and I now have an almost perfect way to keep track of anything I see on the web, including recipes. I also keep my shopping list in OneNote so when I go to the grocery store, all I need do is check my phone, which is also linked into my recipe notebook (see the first pic).

Below are a few snapshots of OneNote and a recipe pmillen recently posted on this site (OneNote Clipper automatically places a link to the source credit near the top of the clip). Most importantly, all I did was make a few mouse clicks - I did not type a single word.

Click the pics to toggle full/normal size

This is the front end of my recipe notebook
with the shopping list page visible. I simply check
what I need when in OneNote, and when at the
store, go down my checklist using my phone
When on a page with a recipe (or anything I
want to clip), I simply click the OneNote Clipper
icon in the Firefox menu bar and the clipper
comes up - I can choose whatever method makes
the recipe look the best. In this instance I was at
the recent pork loin recipe posted by pmillen

The OneNote clipper then opens a drop down list
that allows you to choose which notebook section
you want the recipe to be clipped to
Now every time you to to your recipe notebook
you will see the recipe as a new page added to
the bottom of the section you sent it to

Nice work PZ.

I use Google Save, but it doesn't look as functional as that.

i just started using this on my Chromebook and doing an online training session on Microsoft's site.  I can see how this may be useful for me.  Especially for planning a trip.  I need to put it on my phone and see how well things sync.  Thanks again for sharing.

I use Evernote which is free and they have addons for most browsers as well as mobile software for phones / tablets.  I can tag a recipe on a website and it will save to all my devices.  You can also add categories like chicken, beef, sides, ect for easy sorting.

Evernote is an excellent application, and I've used it in the past, and probably still would be if our institution had not become a Microsoft shop. Once that happened, they would not pay for the Evernote Premium membership, and forced us to go to OneNote

...  I can see how this may be useful for me.  Especially for planning a trip.  I need to put it on my phone and see how well things sync.  Thanks again for sharing.

Funny that you should mention trips Bar-B-Lew - I'm an avid RV-er and use OneNote to manage all my trips, keep records of last years trips, and even manage the RV trip checklist. It is super easy to use, and because my recipes are also in my notebook list, everything I do is in one place. Here's a snapshot of an entry for a recent trip we took to the Oregon coast. In the page list on the right part of the OneNote window we have things like:
  • Clickable link to Google Maps for the entire round trip
  • Each RV park we planned to stay including the confirmamtion email, site map, and notes regarding our stay there - notes are useful because we report wireless, cable TV, and other availability
  • Step-bystep direction from one park to the next, including any sketchy interchanges - see image below where I have a satellite snippet overlying the Google Maps image of a potentially difficult interchange
  • A page of things to do in each of the locations including restaurants and attractions we want to visit

I'm getting old and forgetful, and became tired of forgetting items we need, places we wanted to visit and such. Funny thing is that I always remember those things after the fact  ;D

Now, when I go to Winchester Bay next year I can simply look at the 2017 trip details, and each of the notes pages detailing our stops and visits.

I just copy everything to Word Pad, including pictures, then put in a folder on my external hard drive.  ..................................     ZEP

PZ, the tabs moved from the top to the left side when my OneNote updated a couple of vintages back.  I rather like them arranged that way.

That's a great idea! I use OneNote extensively at work. I've been using EverNote for recipes for years, however, I'm getting a bit tired of the lack of 'UNDO' and limited formatting. I'm going to think about migrating everything over to OneNote.

You can also arrange them anyway you want. I have it so the tabs are on the side and the top. You can also setup sections inside of other sections.

I didn't know that.  Thanks.

Yep.  A valuable feature.

Thanks for the tip PZ. I just added the OneNote app to my iPad. I was using an app called Notes but OneNote seem easier and more powerful.

I have been using OneNote for years and it is one of my must have applications.  I use it to keep track of my hobbies and work notes and code scripts.  I also use an add-on product named Onetastic.  It's a collections of helpful macros that do specific tasks.  It was created by one of the Microsoft engineers that wrote OneNote.

Edit... The pro version is now $15.

Microsoft has a utility that imports Evernote notes to OneNote. Just imported 180 notes and it worked great. For some reason, a few of the notes were Untitled, but that was easy to fix. I notice that there is no way to sort pages in a notebook, but it looks like the add-on that Darwin mentioned - Onetastic - takes care of that.
