I been watching BBQ pitmasters on tv and find it entertaining. Never been to a bbq competition and was wondering if there is enough going on to keep girlfriend entertained for one or two days. She says we dont need to go out of town to see a bunch of fat guys babysitting smokers. She sees that every weekend when looking out window at me and the neighbors.

Been a few times as a competitor.  Won 3rd out of 500 teams in 2010.  Your girlfriend has it summed up pretty well, except there are some of us fat women out there also.  Trooper and ZCZ may see this and post some photos from prior years when the Pelletheads.com team competed.

Bentley wants to go compete next year as team PelletFan.com and is always looking for team members.  Come out next year and cook something.

The earlier photo is the illustrious ZCZ doing one of his turn-in at the Royal. I can't remember if this was chicken or ribs.


The thigh box is a photo of one of my turn-ins. But now that I think about it, it probably was not at the Royal. It might have been the turn-in at a competition in Jeffersonville, Indiana. They were good lookin thighs, but the scoring was a complete "crash & burn" situation. 50th out of 59 teams. MEGA-OUCH!

Yes they do!
I think I have heard others (Kristen ?) that muffin tin?
Is that how they remain so uniform ?

My ribs from the 2015 Royal. Good for 24th out of 603 teams that turned in ribs.  I think I was less than 2 pts. out of the top 10.  Got lucky & landed st a good table.

I do compete in chicken.  My best at the Royal was a tie for 25th out of 500.  My chicken turn ins never have looked anywhere near as good as Trooper. TechmoGogy also does an outstanding chicken turn in box.  I think they both use the min-meatloaf pans to keep the shape.

In my humble opinion I think chicken is the hardest meat to cook in a competition.  LOTS of factors involved in hitting it just right.

The pictures and the level of skill they depict are exactly why I am so dang scared of ever trying something like this.
I have made lots of decent meals but I would need to practice for about 30 years to even come close, just crazy good looking, ALL of it.

Appearance is only one category and is given the least weight out of the 3 -- appearance, taste, tenderness.  It doesn't mean you can just blow it off and, at a big comp like the Royal, you need all 9's.  But taste is given the most weight, followed by tenderness.  So, if you cook chicken well, you can learn to make it look fairly pretty in a few practices (perfection takes a bit longer!).  But no one should ever be intimidated to compete.  Your flavors and skills in cooking may put you at the top.

And, if not (which is me most of the time!) at least you have a unique experience to add to your memories!
