Pit Boss Pellets, Anyone?
« on: August 27, 2018, 08:17:56 PM »

Anyone use these and if so, what do you think?  From what I've gathered, they're a priced right, but are only 30% flavor wood and 70% base wood.  Is that a bad thing?

I purchased about 20 bags of Pit Boss from Walmart a few months back when they had them on clearance. They work great for me.

Yup, work fine here.  No problems  and good flavor.

I use them for cooking and have no issues.  I do prefer all fruit wood pellets for cold smoking.

I used them when I had no other source of pellets.  Now that I can get Lumberjack pellets locally I don't use them much anymore.  After buying a 40 pound bag of Pit Boss Hickory I found out they were not 100% Hickory.  They work great for cooking pizza or at a point of a long smoke where no more smoke will penetrate the meat anyway.  But if I want as much smoke flavor as I can get I use something else.

I use them in my bullseye for my hot and fast cooking.  I buy lumberjack 100% hickory for my low and slow pit.

Well, here's something I didn't know...I just got an email back from Pit Boss.  Although Jon didn't say what the percentages were, he did say that they use Maple as the base wood for their pellets.  When I called the company last week, they told me the base woods used were alder or oak.  I'll try and get percentages.

It's not necessarily a bad thing depending... Traeger does the same with most of their pellets. It is $ driven... Just check out the prices of wood. Some species are more costly..That explains the use of the less expensive base woods.

Same here.  I'll use them as a last resort.  I was shocked at how flavorless the Pit Boss Hickory pellets were.

I picked up a couple bags from Walmart a few weeks to try them out.  I then went back to my standard - Cookin Pellets.  There was a big difference in flavor, and I will not buy another bag of Pit Boss pellets unless I'm in an emergency situation and waiting 2 days to get a bag from Amazon is not fast enough.

I would call Pitboss a decent pellet, my experience with them has been way to much dust and fines in them for my liking.  Could be from how there handled and stored at the Walmart I purchased them at.  I'm a big Lumberjack pellet guy.  They work well for me and have not had an issue with the dust and fines in them.

In a pinch they are fine. They do seem to have lots of dust/fines in the bags. I’m using the oak/whiskey flavor and have noticed that I’m overshooting the set point on my PG1000 by 75. I haven’t had any issues with any other type or brand so I’m going to assume its related to the oak/whiskey only.

Pit Boss pellets are my everyday grilling pellet, hard to beat for $15 for 40lbs. But yes when I do a long smoke I switch to Cookin Pellets, when I have them.

I use anything that's cheap. With a pellet smoker, you most likely won't be able to tell one pellet flavor from another. I have a rather sensitive pallet and can tell subtle differences, but nothing that really makes anything stand out. That being said, I have lumber jack 100% hickory pellets available to me for about $9 per 20lbs locally, so that's what I use. Some swear by certain flavors, manufacturers etc, find what works for you. I find cheap is just as good as expensive (opening a can of worms). For the record I burn heating pellets also, but I only do so when I know they come from a reputable manufacturer. What's a reputable manufacturer? I don't know. Just because someone brands a pellet something, doesn't mean it's what they say. It's a discussion that probably will never be satisfied ever, mainly because smoking, grilling pellets aren't regulated. Just my .02 cents. Do what you want, it's what I do :)

I usually go with my closest dealer of Lumberjack, which is about a block away.  I have used the Smoke Ring pellets before and like those also but the closest dealer is 20 miles away.
