Got initiated to crab in Tulsa at an "all you can eat crab for $9.95" back in 1990.  They were snow crab and very fresh, and good sized. We all ate about 6 to 8 halves and filled the shell buckets twice.  Been a favorite ever since, but I do like Kings and Dungeness even better but they are too expensive locally (Tulsa,Ok).  Just crab, drawn butter and maybe a cup of fresh clam chowder and I am happy.  Have you ever wondered how the first crab or lobster eaters ate them?  Uncooked? Yuk! Also they did not have butter.  ??

I grew up fishing for crab (and salmon, rock fish, etc) on Puget Sound. I had never tried anything other than Dungeness or Red Rock before I as in the Navy.

So, On a visit to Washington DC I wanted to try Blue crab. We visited a pretty nice restaurant at the national train station and I decided to try the crab cakes. They were very very good , cooked properly, seasoned well, very little filler. I was so impressed I commented to our server how much I enjoyed the crab cakes. She let me know they were a new type of crab the Chef wanted to try, they had them brought in from Seattle. She said they had an odd name she couldn’t pronounce so I said “Dungeness?”
Her, “yes! That’s it! Isn’t it wonderful!”

I still haven’t been able to try Blue crab.

There is only one crab and that is the Maryland Blue Crab or at least that is what us Marylanders say

I have had my fair share of Maryland Blue Crabs growing up. Nothing like sitting around a table all messy eating crabs. But I have been converted over to Dungeness. Now both are great and I think it might be a crab night!

Back in the late '80s I had to work on the Eastern shore for a month.  We actually went out and went crabbing on the Chesapeake. Had the line with eel for bait and the dip net. We did catch a few! We ended paying $30 for a bushel of them. Boiled them up laid out the newspaper and had at it. I lived on seafood that whole month. Mussels, clams, oysters, etc. great time and seafood!!

Maybe some folks. I grew up on the East Coast eating blue crab, but after moving to the Bay Area immediately realized dungeness is the best.

Thats why I used the word "Most". I have had Blue crab fresh on the 3 different trips to the East coast now I order steak.

Growing up on the east coast (VA near DC) I love BLUE CRAB

I've lived in the (UPPER WEST) PNW for 20 years now,
we get fresh Dungeness crab a few times a year and I love it

but,
given the choice,
I'd take a bucket of BLUE CRAB over a few Dungies any day

nice thing about the Dungeness crab is the yield,   you get alot of meat from those suckers

Depending on the size of the crabs and who is extracting meat from them, it takes 2-3 crabs to yield one pound of crab meat. Two like this 8.25" sucker would yield over a pound.

here's the first 37 keepers from one of our trips (3 pots)
we ended up with our limit of 45 that day

the one in my Father In Law's hands was just over 8.5"

that crab pot was our first one pulled that day

Looked at crab in the store yesterday. I could get frozen snow crab legs for $17.99 a pound; frozen King crab legs for $37.99 a pound; no Dungeness to be found.

I think the normal price (here in the PNW) is about $5/lb (whole/live)

I grew up in Maryland and moved to the SF Bay area in California after college.  I'll stick with Dungeness.  They're a lot less work per pound and taste better in my opinion. 

This past Christmas was the first time in the past three years we could have Dungeness for Christmas.  Toxic algae has delayed the opening of the season in both 2016 and 2017.  We typically buy the precooked crab from one of the local stores.  It's funny out of all the grocery chains we have around us, Costco seems to have the freshest crab.  I really don't know how they do it.  A short supply chain is my guess.
