Interesting.
Cost of living index for Mpls., MN is 168.
Cost of living index for Riverside, CA is 160.

Am anticipating a move to southern Cal. after retirement later this year to the Riverside/Murrieta area.  To be closer to daughters and grandkids.

Tax-wise MN and CA are not far apart so somewhat of a lateral move that way.

Well, I had been debating about splitting my time between Iceland and Bermuda, but I see I could afford neither!!

Iceland is beautiful, but expensive.  I recall a similar study which was the cost of a McDonalds Big Mac around the world.  For me it's just a pint of beer.   At home it's about $5 give or take.  Reykjavik is closer to $10.  Still totally worth a visit.

I forwarded this on to my three adult kids.  They got a kick out of it. One lives in San Jose, another in New York City, and the last in Houston.  My son in Houston is the winner for low CoL.  I did his income tax this year with TurboTax.  It is so weird not having to pay state income tax.

Did you read todays headlines, "Cash-strapped California mulls new levies on water, tires, batteries, soda pop and more" and they have the highest income and gas tax in the country. I considered CA when I retired but I could not afford it, cost of living in AZ is 15-20% less depending where you live.  :o

Instead of a Big Mac index, why not a “Pellet bag” index?

I’ll start...In Christchurch, NZ, minimum wage is NZ$17.70, and a 9Kg bag of Traeger pellets costs NZ$34.99, so here it takes 1.98 hours of minimum wage work to buy a bag of pellets.

How does that stack up to other places?

Note: We don’t have locally-made options, but Bunnings has started selling pellet grills so that might change.

That’s a great idea!

The minimum wage in Nebraska is $9.00 per hour.

Ace Hardware sells 20 lb. bags of all Traeger pellets at $18.99.

So in Nebraska it takes 2.11 hours of minimum wage work to buy a bag of pellets.

I have heard of where seniors have chucked everything and live on board a cruise ship.  It may not be a bad idea when you think about it.  Don't take the most expensive cabin but yet your bed is made and your room is cleaned every day.  No food to buy as meals are included (and if you go to the buffet line you can always carry some back to your room). Plus you get free use of the pool and spa, free entertainment and travel to different ports of call.  Just saying it may not be a bad deal.

On one of my cruise ship excursions I ran across just the situation that you described. This lady had a permanent cabin on the ship and it cost her around $75/day. Try and find a retirement home for that price.

I think we should really be focusing on the cost per Kg/Lb of pork belly and not trivial beer, Big Macs and pellets!

ZCZ, if you end up coming out here give me a shout! I Have houses in LA and in Apple Valley. Would love to get together!

hughver, CA certainly has its fair share if challenges, but I have been living here for 37 years now after moving from NYC. I live in a very safe neighborhood, have great neighbors, have a huge 3 mile commute to work, 3 miles from the beach, 2 hours from the mountains or deserts!

As loing as I don't use too much water, drive too far on the freeway, consume too much gas or use plastic straws, I will be ok.
