Vac seal?  Like a FoodSaver?

It'll blow up the package like a balloon, over-inflate it and burst it.

There is no 'extra' CO2 made for dry ice. It is made by capturing CO2 from factories and power plants.

I often wondered how the CO2 was obtained.  So CO2 that would have gone into the atmosphere is made into dry ice?  Then it finally gets into the atmosphere when it turns from a solid directly into a gas (sublimation)?

It appears to me that it's CO2 that's new to the atmosphere.  It'll either be released to the atmosphere at the source, the factories and power plants you mentioned, or it'll be released when it sublimates.

We used to do this in plastic pop bottles at a for job I worked. Adding water made it blow up faster..... :clap:

Thanks for all of the valuable input/suggestions. I've decided to try the large ice chest, precool the cooler for 18 hours, pack with 0° frozen food and top with 40-50 lbs. of dry ice and leave around 6:00 AM tomorrow morning. I'll check to see how the dry ice is doing Tuesday morning and if necessary, add more in Boise, ID.

Update: Loaded cooler with ~125 lbs. of various meats (about 70% smoked/vacuum packed) and topped with 40 lbs. of dry ice at 9:30 PM Sunday evening. Stopped in Twin Falls, ID. at 9:00 AM Tuesday morning to check dry ice. There were still small pieces left but I added another 20 lbs. just to be on the safe side. I loaded the boat freezer around 8:00 PM Tuesday and most of the added 20 lbs. of added dry ice was still in tact, 5 or ten would have probably been sufficient. I may be on the boat for the next 3-4 months but I'll surely eat well.  :lick:

I have a question... or comment.     Where did you keep the cooler while traveling?

I ask, because I was going to buy some Dry Ice last year , for a trip I was taking, I started researching it, and it seemed like having dry ice inside a enclosed vehicle wasn't really a very good idea.  The idea being that as the dry ice melts,  a significant amount of CO2 gets released and could potentially make a CO2 rich environment in your vehicle. 

 Was this a concern and/or did you not keep yours inside the main vehicle you were driving?

When I have bought it, I get it at Wal-Mart and if memory serves it is about $1.40#. It has been a while though. I also think our Dillons (Kroger) stores sell it as well.

In AZ (at WinCo) I paid $1.46/lb., in Twin Falls (at Fred Meyer/Kroger) I paid $1.69/lb.. I did not have time to do so, but it's much cheaper and can be obtained in larger blocks at an ice supplier. I carried the cooler on a rack mounted to the trailer hitch of my SUV. I was told that it would be OK to carry it inside as long as you used outside ventilation.
