Would You Buy a Ticket to See a Pit Tested ?
« on: December 05, 2019, 07:51:50 AM »

It has been suggested that we run a member funded pool to purchase some of the new pits coming out -- Weber, Oklahoma Joe's, etc. -- with members knowing that they would never win the pit.  After testing was finished, it would be donated to a charitable organization.  I would like to know whether we would ever have enough members to do this.  Given the price of these new pits, we would probaly need to sell 150 tickets.

With my simple math skills are you talking something like $10.00 per ticket or so?

No, as I stated in the question, $5 a ticket.  If you bought two, it would be $10, three $15, etc.  I just don't think there are enough folks interested in funding a purchase to cover the costs associated with buying some of these new pits, but we will see.

Bentley could road trip to Iowa and performance my Weber when it gets here. I'm sure he'd love Iowa in January or February :rotf:

While it really would be fun to meet and hang out with Bentley, it would probably be just as expensive in gas or airfare, etc. as getting a pit. Another option that could be considered is buying the pit, testing and selling it locally for whatever could be gotten (hopefully like 75%) and keeping that money in a fund for the next test so only a portion of the tickets would need sold.

Yes, I would be interested in seeing new model testing.  Seeing the testing from a few years ago is what influenced me to buy a FireCraft model.  Unfortunately, and not fault of Bentley FireCraft no longer exists and the controller was not a long term investment.

I'm interested in what sort of charitable organization would receive the pit tested.  Are you suggesting a Goodwill type of organization that will resell the pit, or are you thinking about a volunteer fire organization that would keep and use the pit?

I think what I will do is see about putting in a donation link.  It takes about $200/year to fund the site.  The ThermaWorks money is not coming in as much, and that is to be expected with small Membership, but there will be some money from it.  I will contribute 25% of the cost of the site.  If there are donations great, if not, I will just have to see how I feel in July when renewal time comes around.  If the contribution exceed the money needed for keeping the site running, I then think we should see what those funds are, and ask members how they would like them spent.

As always, we need to think on this awhile.  But I though I would thrown this out there.  It would be a lot easier to ship an electric slicer, or a LEM grinder, or a vac sealer to someone then a pit!

Anyone know how to add a donation link to a site?

Edit:You have $ ‎45.47 in approved unpaid commissions from ThermoWorks...so there is another 25% of next years fees, now all we need is another 50%.

I am more than glad to contribute to the cost of keeping the site funded, unfortunately, unless I had a senior moment, I could not find  donation tab on the home page.  :-[

Frankly, I would prefer to give to Goodwill, Salvation Army, our local Hospital Thrift store for them to re-sell than the fire depts cuz I don't think the FDs are using them that much.

The problem is that most of the money derived from donations to the mentioned charities goes to administrative cost. For Goodwill, in 2016, 93.5% of revenue went to administrative cost and only 6.5%went to help the poor.  ???

Could something like this work?
We fund a pit, you folks test it, you sell it and the proceeds go to support the site.
That way everyone wins in the end, just a thought.
Most people are willing to help fund the site I would think and then we could all get info on the new stuff.

I responded as being willing to purchase one ticket for sure, but depending on the circumstances would consider buying a couple more if needed. Would also be glad to contribute toward the maintenance of the site.

I would be willing to help fund the site in general or pit testing reviews.

1.  I'd pay $10 or so to fund the purchase of test pits.  It would be more acceptable to me if they were lottery tickets where I had a chance to win it.  If I won it, Bentley could say, "Okay.  Come and get it."  If that weren't advisable for me, then Bentley could list it on an Internet sales site and retain half the sale price for his trouble.

2.  There are a number of forums that charge a membership.  I belong to one that focuses on outdoor cooking and recently opted out of another.  Both charge $25 a year.  PelletFan exceeds both in meeting my needs, so I'd happily pay it.
