Passing of a Good Friend
« on: January 17, 2020, 08:46:03 PM »

I just heard from Trooper who heard from West Allis BBQ that our good friend Phrett has passed on. Bentley, Trooper, Phrett and I all met for the first time at the 2010 American Royal. Phrett’s Pork was the team’s turn-in for the Pellethead’s 3rd Place finish. Phrett joined us again for a show of support at the 2015 Royal. Had the grand experience of cooking on a team with him again in 2016 at a comp in WI along with West Allis and Trooper.

RIP good buddy until we meet again.

I had met Phrett about 6-8 years ago by coincidence at Chris's cookinpellets warehouse as we were both there at the same time to pick up some bags of pellets.  At the time, he had a cast on one of his legs, but I don't remember why.  The three of us had only met each other via the old site prior to our first in person meeting.  Glad I had the chance to meet him that day.  He seemed like a great guy on the old board and in the few minutes that I got to meet him in person.  If I recall, he was a police officer at one point in his life (maybe for quite a bit of it).  So a big thanks for his service to his and our community.  Condolences to his wife who was there at the time of our meeting (and a nice lady as well) and to those that spent more time with him than my 5-10 minutes.  RIP fellow Pellet Fan.

I gotta believe he was in his late 50s or early 60s.  Passed way to early by modern life expectancy standards.

He and I shared the same name (Alan) and the same birth year (1953). He had just turned 67 earlier this month.

Oh what sad, sad news.  Talked with him at several competitions when he was on the Pelletheads.com team.  Al, if you comminicate with Jeri, please give her my condolences.

Phreet and his wife Jeri were giving folks.  They sent the same Brats they brought to the American Royal to us to enjoy one year.  I remember taking some to a competition I was helping Larry do at Knotts Berry Farm.  He was not a huge Brat fan and he ate 2.  His oldest daughter was on the verge of being a vegetarian and she even ate one they were so good!  They even taught me how a proper Wisconsin Brat should be prepared before grilling.

We will meet again!

Those pictures and comments you posted Bentley are an awesome tribute to him, really.

Here is the link to his obituary if anyone wishes to post comments there:

I believe Usingers is made in Milwaukee.  They serve them at the Brewers ballpark.

As ZCZ mentioned, we all seemed to have met at the Royal in Kansas City a few years ago. Phrett and I pretty much hit it off as we had a lot in common.
We both liked to eat good food, loved BBQ, had issues with diabetes, and had both spent a carrier in law enforcement. Phrett was a retired Milwaukee Police Department Patrolman. He served in the trenches of Milwaukee. Certainly not pleasant locations to spend your shift.

His wife Jeri cared for him deeply. Phrett and I met in Chicago and attended a BBQ Competition Seminar there as taught by Scottie Johnson - CancerSucks.com Competition Team and also taught by Mike Wozniak. Al made many thoughtful and interesting comments during the seminar.

We got a team together and cooked together in a competition in the Milwaukee area.

Phrett often discussed coming over to my side of the state a he and I doing a competition together. (Silver Lake BBQ comp.). Al had quite a array of BBQ cooking gear and smokers. But I remember most how delighted he was when he finally got his Memphis PRO. (I think Jerri had the most to do with that)

I could go on and on about the great times we had together. But I'll just leave it there for now.

Shalom, Good Friend. You are certainly in a better place now.

Hi all

It has been a long time since I have been on the board and wish it was without the loss of Al.  I am heart broken and just can't seem to get the right words out today about it.  I am attaching the obit.

I will try to get back into the swing of board when my life calms down.  But for now, take care all...
