Countertops
« on: January 23, 2020, 09:03:48 AM »

Trying to get a handle on what we want for countertops.
We are just getting started on planning our kitchen remodel, we have the cabinets picked out, sink, appliances etc.
We though we had landed on tops and then I saw a guy who custom makes epoxy tops, his work is phenomenal from what I have seen.
He says they are comparable to corian in characteristics, does any one have experience with either of those and care to share info?
Thanks,

We bought quartz and it is extremely low maintenance.  After 4.5 years in the new house they still look like new.  My wife just sprays windex or Sam's glass cleaner on them to wipe something off.  They don't require refinishing or whatever you call it that I believe is needed on granite.

19 years with granite.  And it was cheap builder grade granite.   While we have granite cleaner, we use it maybe twice a month, just like windex.

I would highly recommend as I can put a hot pan down with no concerns, even knife work in a pinch.

In our 55 years of marriage we've had formica, Corian and granite.  We prefer granite.  I pretty well ignore it but may seal it once a year (or at longer intervals—I'm not the best at that kind of maintanance).

Some chemicals damage Corian and there was another reason that it didn't satisfy us, but it escapes me.

The reason I said Corian is that the fabricator says that epoxy is very comparable to it.
He just really makes some remarkable epoxy tops but I have absolutely no experience with it and no one we know has them.
We are still open but just really curious as to others opinion of it.

What does he say with respect to putting hot pots right onto it and also staining?  Does the finish dull or scratch over time? (that would be my concern with epoxy).

It does not seem that marble is in the mix, but if you like to cook don't go with marble.  Looks fabulous in a "show" kitchen, but stains badly and needs to be sealed often.

Our quartz doesn't seem to scratch, stain, or require any seal or polish.

Since quartz countertops are made from ground quartz mixed with epoxy and have proven to be durable in the kitchen, I assume that the custom epoxy tops you saw would be comparable.

He told us that it is heat resistant up to 500º, easy to remove any scratches (should they arise) and virtually impossible to stain and absolutely no worries about germs etc.
He goes on to say that the formulas have come a long way from just a few years ago even?
Pmillen I did not know that about that about quartz tops but it is a valid point. I have spoken with 2 of his customers and they swear by the tops, his installation and the durability so far. One has had them just 2 years and the other 4.
One other problem although a small one, you can pick out how you want them to look but being custom you are not picking from "say a slab". On that note he assures me that if we give him a detailed idea of the colors (sample swatch things he will provide) and a picture of what we want he can make it happen.

We've got quartz - Silestone in the kitchen and CeasarStone in the bathroom. Both are no maintenance and durable.  The kitchen is about 20 years old and holding up great.

But there are some pretty cool things you can do with epoxy. I was thinking about refinishing a tabletop. Lots of great utube video's on how to do it - here's a good one but there are a ton more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQG7dLATkeM

He is Midwest Monsters of epoxy.
There is some really crazy stuff that I have seen, to be honest a lot of it is too loud for us but he has shown me plenty of more traditional tops and they are fantastic.
You are correct Bregent, there is some pretty wild things that can be done.

Sounds like epoxy might be the winner.  I have had granite for over 20 years, but always nice to learn about new surfaces!

It seems like Quartz is more expensive than Granite, but has some positive features to it that may be worth the extra price to some.  How does the price of epoxy compare to quartz and granite?

We have not priced the other 2, we are going to go to Kansas City this weekend to look at a showroom so I just have general ideas on pricing.
He quoted me pricing between $20.00 to $50.00 a square foot.
Varies due to integral splash, live edge look and of course the intricacies of the design.
What we think we want he said would be $30.00 and that is more for the granite look counter tops with integral splash.
He said it goes up from there when you want wood looking grains, butcher block look, live edge etc.
Still have not settled on anything yet but am very seriously considering the epoxy at this point.
