I voted no, but I bought one of these several years ago and it really enhances the hot dog experience. https://www.amazon.com/SLOTDOG-EMW9018136-Red/dp/B00X6UTAVQ

Yeh got one some time ago for brats.  Doesn't work very well, skins too tough to penetrate so I banged on it with rubber mallet.  I plan on brats for the 4th myself.  SWMBO eats a hotdog once a year but it must be cremated. :rotf:

hughver,

I looked at it on Amazon and noticed is says to use skinless hot dogs.

We buy Hebrew National Kosher Beef Franks that have an outer skin (not a casing) for the grandkids.

Have you tried it on skinned hot dogs, and if so, how well did it work?

To be honest, I had never heard of a skinless hot dog before.

Me neither, I think that they are referring to the casing as skin. It worked on every hot dog I tried it on.

Pretty sure they mean a meat that is not in a casing.  The brats have a natural casing, I have Had Hebrew National and I am pretty sure they would be considered "skinless".

Thanks to both of you.

I could understand not working with true casings, but was surprised when it said skinless.

I'll give one a try for the grandkids on the 4th.

Thanks...

I think it splits the dog open and gives it more surface area for char texture and supposedly flavor penetration from the charcoal or smoke

When I eat hot dogs I like them severely seared, this device increases the surface area for searing.  ???

I wonder if you would like a Cremator from the Rutt's Hut in Cliffton, NJ?

No dogs for us.
We make pizza every other Saturday, and this is pizza Saturday.
Otherwise, it would probably have been Brats and Burgers.
