None of it ever reaches a budget where it could be considered to be helping keep the average student's costs down.

So it appears that the average student might be helped financially if the university didn't use the profit to subsidize the non-profitable sports.

I am sorry that I can't cite to an exact source, but my understanding was that a lot of the profitable male athletic sports (football, basketball) subsidized female athletics, especially scholarships for female athletes under Title IX.  So a lot of young women who had some athletic ability were able to go to college via scholarships paid for by the male football and basketball programs.  Don't know if they would be considered the "average students", but they got college educations funded and that had to be a huge help.

Interesting discussion.  Probably best suited for another thread or, perhaps, another forum.

Aaaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!!!  I can't take it. The college football rankings make no sense.  Ohio State is No. 6, Penn St. is No. 9, Oregon is No. 12, Wisconsin is No. 16.  The problem?  None of them has yet played a game, they are all 0-0. So what are these rankings about, being a "place holder" for certain conferences?  Geez, I already knew the rankings were somewhat rigged, but this is ridiculous.  And an insult to some schools.  I mean, BYU is undefeated at 4-0 and has 3 schools that have yet to play ranked above them!  Same for Oklahoma State at 3-0. These systems have to change.

Sooners were ranked #3 before they got whipped twice with a defense that couldn't last the second half. But looked like a different team last Sat. against Texas.  One of the most exciting games I have seen between them. 4 OT's before the Sooners iced it. Both quarterbacks did not bloom until the second half. It was a good clean game after the early mistakes.  BOOMER!

The SEC is imploding with COVID.  I'm now torn on whether I want the season to continue or not.  I have not been able to get overly excited to watch many games yet.  With hockey and basketball over and baseball to be ending in a few weeks, it sure would be nice for the NFL and NCAA to continue into February.  It just seems more and more challenging as every week goes by and another team has an outbreak.

I guess I do not see the issue of healthy people catching the flu?  Are the players dropping dead, no they are not, they are not even being hospitalized.  About all I have to say on it.

I was coming from a standpoint of it just doesn't feel like a real college football season to me - shortened schedules, delayed schedules, big games cancelled, leagues cancelled, players opting out, no fans or reduced fans in the stadiums, etc.

Most have had no symptoms--period. They are only a risk to their elders, but not each other. How many times have they had a "cold" and played anyhow.  I do think it wise for them to stay off the field for 10-14 days, but would not shut down the team or games.  Gives some of the subs a chance to play.

I played a HS playoff game with 102° fever once.  I did not know it until after the game.
