I have some surgery coming up.
I will certainly alert the medics to keep an eye on me in the recovery room and make sure my breathing remains OK.
I imagine that being out from under the anesthesia will be similar to sleeping and I'm worried about this situation.

.........I quit breathing 90x in an hour when I had my sleep study.  They slapped a machine on me right away after the first hour.
Much like my story. In my early 40's I thought most of my life had run out of me, no energy, always tired, napped every time I stopped doing anything. Nodding off behind the wheel which resulted in a couple of minor (Thank God) fender bumpers. I made a beeline for a sleep study..results stopped breathing 109x an hour and blood ox below 50%. They put their machine on me for the last half of the night. They woke me up early the next day and sent me on my way with an order for a CPAP. As I walked out of the sleep lab I was impressed by how good I felt that morning. I have never looked back. I tell people that CPAP saved my life. I am 65 now and living much improved.

I was put out for a procedure. I told them about my situation and they gave me oxygen in place of a CPAP.
All was good.
Don't need to worry, just let them know.

I found I did not like the cushion as well as the pillow for some reason.

My wife has been on CPAP for 20 years, started I her mid 30s, when she lost a lot of weight she was able to reduce the pressure a lot but not stop.  She uses nose pillows.  I did a sleep study after her (mid 30s) and went on cpap, I tried hard but never could tolerate the machine and gave up.  At some point I tried a dental appliance that shifts the jaw forward, it help some.  About 10 years ago I tried again with cpap and with the newer/smarter machines I was able to tolerate it.  Ive been using a combination of Cpap and the dental appliance for about 10 years.  Sleep studies that I have done showed that in combination I was able to get down to <4 events per hour, but neither alone could.  I'm at 75 per hour without anything. My O2 gets a little low so I have oxygen hooked up to the cpap.  When I travel I don't mess with the oxygen and do fine, but I do feel better with it.  Many years ago I lost a bunch of weight and the apnea was better but not gone, now I'm seriously overweight which makes it worse. I know some people loose weight and the apnea is gone, but that wasn't our case, but I did help a lot.   I use a full face mask, I have to have my mouth covered.

I just use the mask that covers my nose.
Went to get my D.O.T. medical card renewed and gave them the readings from my machine.
They were impressed that I had 100 percent compliance on my usage.

I had back surgery in Feb. of '16.  A friend was the operating room and recovery room nurse.  She said that when I was in the recovery room I quit breathing to the extent that my lips turned blue.

That coupled with my raucous snoring makes me think that I have undiagnosed sleep apnea.

But—I don't snore when I sleep on my side so that's what I do and I don't feel at risk.

(Who would have guessed that the OP would get 21 replies and probably more to come?)

15 years on Auto-PAP... nasal pillows... Wouldn't sleep without it... couldn't really.  I probably had it 10 years before I got diagnosed.

Oh, I recommend that you take your own machine and gear with you  to the hospital... You'd be surprised the kind of stuff they have,  if you don't take your own.

I began using a nasal CPAP machine after a 1994 sleep study recorded apneas and hypoapneas of 143.1/hr and oxygen saturation of 80%.  I had been falling asleep several times in my office and multiple times while driving.  It's amazing that I didn't hurt myself or some innocent party.

Strange thing is: I thought I was sleeping like a baby.

The machine changed my life.  If you snore, hold your breath, or can't seem to get enough rest, PLEASE get a sleep study.

I went into the ER
Thought heart attack
They did all the tests and told me to relaxe and go to sleep that I am OK

no CPAP noise ER Long night
Stress test in the A.M.
The best reward was a pizza  that got delivered to my house after the ambulance halled me away was wating for me the next day when I got home

That's pretty much how I got my hospital experience... if I ever get in an ambulance or go to ER, I hope someone brings my machine.  UofM  hospital ER found a CPAP machine about the size of a 1980s PC and probably as old as a 80s PC.  Not to mention the mask was ancient and didn't fit well.
