Canadian John asked about this type of poll in another thread, so thought I would bump it.

I have 2 Memphis pellet pits, probably not considered smokers but I have a ceramic egg style and a Weber Performer which I use pellets in to add smoke Flavor. I also use pellets in my gasser. I cook on a wood fire pit with a grate as well & roast hot dogs on a outdoor fireplace. I don’t use my portable gasser much or my camp chef 3 burner camp stove with griddle.

I have a Kuma Platinum SE and a Memphis Elite.   I loved my Kuma but could not pass up the deal I got on the Elite.  My brother-in-law wants to buy my Kuma and I will probably sell it to him since I have no need for 2 grills.  Its just me and my wife and when we entertain its usually 12 people or less-the Elite should handle that easily.

If you ever get into making bit batches of jerky or needing to cook multiple things at different temps, you may wish that you had both grills.  If you have the room and don't need the money, I would hold onto both.  But, I guess you could always borrow it from your BIL if necessary.

I wanted two, one for high heat & one for low & slow. I don’t have to burn one off for high heat cooks

I have a Traeger Lil Tex and a Yoder YS640. Why did I get the 2nd one you ask. Because the price was too good to pass up.

I started with the Traeger and have been pleased with it since day 1, but that did not stop me from tinkering. I happened to be reading through PH about 5 years ago and came across a person that was so unhappy with his Yoder YS640 that he posted "The first person to show up and take this grill can have it for free". I immediately sent the owner a private message telling him I would gladly take off his hands. The grill was located about 5 hours from where I lived at the time and so the very next morning I got up early and drove 5 hours each way to get the grill. The grill cost me about $150 in gas and a most of a Sunday. Then I called up Yoder and asked if they could send me a manual because the previous owner did not have it. The people at Yoder asked how I got the grill and I told them and sent them a link to thread. Yoder sent me new fans, new chimney, a new wiring harness (originally had 1 fan but the current crop of Yoders had 2 fans) and something to update the firmware, at no charge. It was everything needed to bring my grill up the current spec, which was about 2 years after the date the grill was built. All free to me... I could not believe it.

Lucky guy.

I had some grills down for maintenance, dirty, or something else related to my 2015 moved at one point in 2017.  Someone on PH had a used Blazn Grand Slam for $300.  My road trip was about half of yours to pick it up one weekend.  Brought it home and it worked great.  Spent about $30 to put new wheels on it since then.  It has since become my favorite grill to make chicken wings on.

Crazy stories about how we end up with some of these things.

which brings us to the next question.  If I were to upgrade ... do I sell the 8 year old Traeger Texas, minor rust (my fault actually) warped, upgraded, parts replaced and perfectly functional?  Or do I keep it for backup?   I'm thinking about the latter.  I don't think I could let my first love go for $400.    I only need the double capacity once a year (Thanksgiving).

I would keep it, if you have the room and still has lots of life left in it..Give it a good look-over before deciding.

Can serve as aback-up for a big cook or if the new pit fails.

Back yard improvement: Two pits look better than one.

Always have a backup, IMO, especially if you like it.  If you need the money, then that's another story.

I was given a brand new Tailgater and wasn't impressed with it.  Found a GMG DB on CL that needed work and got it really cheap, not free but cheap for me, and enjoy it.  I use the Traeger for high heat cooks and the GMG for low and slow.

Just one, a MAK 2*; I gifted my previous smoker, a Traeger Jr., to a co-worker. That was such a tough smoker to get to know, but the experience really helped me learn how to smoke and showed me what features I found important in a grill.

Two MAK 2 Stars. I purchased the 3rd production MAK 2 Star off the line (#28) in 2009. I received a 2016 model 2 Star as a gift and do all my cooking on that one.
