Title: Hawaii Cruise
Post by: Bentley on January 23, 2023, 02:50:30 PM
Some Photos of the Hawaii Cruise.  Maybe a good photographer could capture the "True Blueness" but I am not that guy.  The Pacific away from shore is not the same as the Pacific close to the shore!  It is a Color that must be seen to truly see the color!

Don't hold me to it, but I believe the next 2 are, 1st is the Dormant/Extinct(?),  Mauna Loa.  And the next 2 are Mauna Kea.

Rainbow Falls on Hawaii.  Very close to downtown Hilo.  All the islands seemed drier then the last 2 times I have been.

A reason why I do not subscribe to the premise we eat with our eyes 1st.  I think you will agree that most all of these phots look delicious?  They were not!  All but one beef dish was Superb!  Perfectly cooked for me when I asked for Medium Rare, except one time, and i am sure you will be able to tell which cut that was.  They did make it right!

Now for the pretty...but bad.  Most of the Seafood was horrible!  Either overcooked (the salmon), all bread (the crab cake) or fishy, everything else!  When Kristin stops choosing the Fish, some thing is wrong.  I love Scallops and they were bad!

The Desserts!  All very appealing, right?  I would say 70/30 to the good!  The last one had to be cooked sous vide, it was unbelievably smooth and delicious!

A few outliers!  A grilled pineapple starter.  Kristin will have to comment on it.  Hawaiian Shaved Ice in Hilo.  $17 with tax, ridiculous price for a cheap screw!  I thought I had experienced Hawaiian Shave Ice on the mainland, after eating this, I had not.  Worth the price!  An eggcelent Chorizo starter!  The soups were very good! Cheese plate for dessert...Meh.  The smoked Gouda was good.

They had the Trident Grill on board.  Burgers, Dogs and Chicken Tacos anytime you want.  I dont think the guy form Odessa have ever seen a Bent Double Bacon, Double Chees burger! They had trouble getting Medium right, but still some of the best food on the Ship!  A Pork Turin in the Horizon (buffet).  Surprisingly good!

Princess.

Lets just say that it was no where near as pleasurable as the 2019 Panama Canal, nor the 2003 Alaska Inside Passage.  I am afraid that Princess is either becoming a 2nd Carnival (their parent company) or they are not back to pre-covid performance.  We assumed after a year + of resumed cruising they would have been at 100%, they are far from that!  In a word, it was very disappointing!

It will be awhile before I go on another cruise.

All the pictures look good.
How much time did you get to spend off the ship ?
The 2 cruises we've been weren't more than 5 to 6 hours off the ship.

Some nice pictures of the vacation. The burger gets my vote for the food, I am not a big sauce on things person so most of the other plates I would  have probably eaten but the burger would have been the treat I would have went back to again and again.

The food pics are interesting. ... The  ones of the countryside are amazing. They warm me up on these cold & dull Winter days.

I think it was 9 hours in Hilo, 13 in Honolulu, 9 in Kawaii, about 9 in Lahaina and about 5 in Ensenada.

Did you get some of the fish tacos in Ensenada.  Wow, just realizing its been over 20 years since I've been there when I used to go there for work.  Wonder what has changed since then.

Kristin was starting to get the flu or Covid the night before, so she did not get off.  I got off and started to walk to the main road, but it was a long way, and to be honest with you, not the time of day I eat that much.  We were allowed to get off the boat at 8 and had to be back on by 1pm, so I really did not want to eat. Specially a fish taco!

I'm sorry to hear that Princess has deteriorated. I have 17 Princess cruises under my belt and 20 overall. I've been an elite member for over eight years. Health does not allow for cruising these days. It looks like you enjoyed the trip. Nice post.

Nice picts, thanks for sharing your vacation!
I remember that blue you are talk8mg about. Two westpacs. The sea is beautiful out there. Did you get a chance to see the Milky Way? The stars were always amazing too.

Only chance was the night before we got into Ensenada.  It was a bright sky, but even with them trying to cut as many lights as possible on the aft part of the ship, still not as good as I had hoped.  Not a whole lot better then a clear moonless night here.

You didn't happen to be in Maui on 12/29 did you?
If so this might be a picture of your ship that I got by accident while on a whale watch.

Just 2 from the boat!  It has change a great deal from when i was there in 1996, even a bit more since the last time I was there in 2008.  The harbor area is completely changed in the last 25 years.

If you have any pictures of Ensenada, please send me a few.  I am curious how it looks compared to when I was there.

How long will your cruise be for.  Jut a suggestion.  If you get a chance add a few days at either at the beginning of the cruis or at the end.  This will give you a chance to explore additional sites.

Mot importantly have a great time and take a lot of pictures as we are looking forward to them

Where are you going JD and with what line?

In October we are going on a Celebrity Cruise line with Educational Opportunities (EO) Tours. It will be 13 days in the Mediterranean Sea. We will depart from Athens, spend time around the Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, and Bethlehem. From there we go Cairo and Alexandria, then Ephesus, Corinth, and back to Athens.

I would love to stay a couple extra days to poke around. However, I do not know how tight the travel arrangements are. Our package includes air fare, so I will need to see how much flexibility there is.

Just got my first passport in the mail the other day, so I am good to go!!!

Wow, what a great trip!!!!  I have never been to Israel, but I have been to Cairo, Ephesus, Corinth and Athens.  You will love it. My parents were with me and I still have a photo somewhere of my Dad standing in the place in Corinth where Paul was supposed to have stood and preached -- it meant so much to him and is a warm memory over 30 years later.  And Ephesus is stunning, I could have explored for days. I hope you are going to the new Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza.  It has just opened in the last couple of years and is suppose to be fabulous. I am very envious and will really look forward to hearing about your journeys.

And I understand Celebrity is a great cruise line.  Bent wants for us to cruise with them next time we feel we want to cruise.

I will be glad to send you information if you would like to join us! The Egyptian Museum in Giza is part of the trip!!

Other than a few hours in Mexico and a few trips to Canada, I have never been outside the US. I have always wanted to travel, but there was usually something else to spend the money on. Last year my wife and I started talking about how nice it would be to go on a trip, but it was more wishful thinking than anything else.

A friend of mine occasionally acts as a host for Holy Land tours. When I asked him about any upcoming trips, he started telling me about this one. As he talked, I realized each stop was on my bucket list. It also didn't hurt that traveling by boat sounded a lot better than ridding in a bus!

The more Sally and I kept talking about it, the more we realized there may not be too may opportunities for us to do something like this (the years are going by way too fast). The real kicker was when I found out that the trip qualifies as continuing education for me. That means I can get some of it reimbursed. After that bit of news, it was a no brainer! It is a ways a way, but it is something we are looking forward to.

A few years back, my wife and I took a 12-day Mediterranean Princess cruise that started in Barcelona and ended in Venice. We visited Monaco, various ports in Italy, The Greek Isles, Greece and Turkey. We pre-arranged private tours in every port which saved us over $2500 by not taking the ship tours.

My wife and mother took that same Mediterranean tour.  My wife did all of the work and booked their own tours and transportation around each city they stopped at.  Apparently, they had a blast.
