Title: Winter 20/21 - Second Nor'easter 1/31-2/2
Post by: Bar-B-Lew on January 31, 2021, 04:42:26 PM
It started to snow here about 1pm today.  It is supposed to end about 1pm on Tuesday.  Yep, you read it right...48 hours of snowfall.  The last forecast I read a few hours ago projected up to 26".

How are others in the Midwest and East Coast getting hit by on or both of these storms that seem to be uniting on top of my house and sticking around for a few days.

Ours started at about 3am this morning.  We have about 5 inches on the ground. Supposed to snow on and off till tomorrow, but we are only to get another inch in that time frame.  Our storm came from Ohio & Mississippi valleys!

Our storm is coming from your storm and meeting a storm coming from the Midwest.

I've been working at home for over 5 years now so tomorrow will be just like a regular work day for me.

We were supposed to get 5 to 9 inches. As per usual, we got the low end. Even with the drifts it's maybe 6 inches.

My wife and Iike snow and winter. Haven't had many good ones as of late. It was disappointing that almost all of the snow came down overnight and we didn't get to watch. (I sound like I'm 80, but I swear I'm only 42).

The upside was the stores were nearly deserted. I can't tell you the last time I went to Costco on the weekend where it wasn't a zoo. There were maybe 15 people there. Target was also a ghost town. Amazing.

We are here in West Central NJ, so similar predictions that BBL indicated.  I just cleared a path to my gasser to grill off some zucchini.  There is already 4-5 inches piled on my RT, so did not want to try and clear it now and maybe have some fall into the hopper.  And just like BBL, since all my travel has stopped the past 11 months, tomorrow and tuesday will just be normal work from home days.  Stay safe, dry and warm all!

SW PA here, they told us it was to start early this morning (Sunday) and we would see several inches on the ground by Sunday night. I was just outside we have maybe an inch. The last thing I saw said 8 to 12 through Tuesday. The second storm of the century this winter.

I would say we have had about 6-8 inches so far, but apparently the heavy stuff is about to start as the Nor'Easter has formed.  Forecasts are in the 16-22 inch range as of now.  Still 24+ hours to watch this play out.

That is a lot, we ended at maybe 5 inches and according to the reports and radar it is done!  From the look of the radar you get it all morning and most of this afternoon!

From what I have read, these storms are like a hurricane in that they are bringing moisture from the ocean in a counterclockwise motion blowing back into the land and dumping snow.  This is supposed to happen for about 24 hours ending at around 1pm tomorrow with snow rates of up to 3" per hour at times.

When I moved to Northern Michigan I was braced for the cold and big snow storms. So far we haven't had it too bad. We have consistently had snow on the ground since November, averaging about 4-6 inches. However I don't think we have had much more than that after any one snow fall. People around here are complaining about a lack of snow, especially the skiers and snowmobilers. However, I am not complaining!

The official snowfall for our immediate area is based on that recorded at the airport which is about 10 miles from my house.  As of midnight, the airport had recorded 26.9 inches of snow from this multi-day storm.  It is still snowing, but expected to fall below the 31.9" record total from 2016 making it the 2nd largest snowstorm in the area since they started keeping records.

Here is a pic I grabbed from a screen shot of a video for a local news channel.  I thought Bentley would like this one.  The left and right sides of the streets are parked covers covered by snowfall and then plowed in as the streets are cleared.  This is what happens on city streets with so many houses and no garages.

I think I would have to have a high volume, tankless water heating system installed in my garage to deal with that!  It would be worth the $20 in propane not to have to shovel.

My wife used the snow blower, but it did take her 3 hours.  We have an indoor hose connection in the garage that has hot water running to it.  She used the hot water with the hose to melt a layer of ice that was about 5ft spot in front of the garage that she had trouble plowing.

You could use your tractor to move the snow.

If you were talking the patio area, that isn't getting shoveled.  I will wait until it melts.  It is supposed to rain Friday.

Woke up this morning with probably another 6 or so. I have a guy that plows my driveway, cheaper and easier than I could do it.

I just clean out from in front of the garage doors.

I was thinking the hot water for the people on the street in the photo you posted.  I have some fine bucket skills on my tractor, but even I don't have the cojónes to try and clear to close to a car!

You could use your tractor to move the snow.

Ah, I get it now.  Most will use a broom to brush of the top and sides of the car and then will have to shovel the snow around it to a pile in front or back of the car as they can't move to the sidewalk.  The video mentioned that there was an open parking spot on the street that people were putting their snow on a pile there.  That much snow in a city with tight quarters like that is a big challenge for removal.

I lived in a neighborhood like that in Bismarck, North Dakota.  We had a wide enough boulevard to pile the snow on between the street and sidewalk.  It stacked up so high that I'd use my snow thrower to move it from the boulevard onto my yard.

I guess they are expensive, but one of the best snow removals I have ever seen was on TV a year or two ago in Boston.  They dump the snow into a big hopper and it quickly melts it into water and flows down the drain.  No build up on the streets or packed in cars or sidewalks.

It looks to me like they hauled the snow to another location and then ran it thru the melter.
My city takes forever just to get the plows thru after a storm, I can't imagine how long it would take of they were hauling it to a remote location.

Mother-in-law had 3-5 inches of snow in MS for the first time in quite some time and some ice after some ice late last week.  Forecast for more ice tonight into tomorrow.

In SW Michigan, we ended up getting around 9 inches of fresh snow, Monday night into Tuesday with some blowing and drifting, enough to make the snow removal equipment appreciated. This lest us with around a solid foot or so on the ground.

This Wednesday am, it was between 10 to 15 below zero. A little brrrrisk for this area,

Just in time for spring to tease us a little the first of next week with temps likely to be back up in the 30’s to possibly near 40..

We feel for those of you that already got ‘blasted’, or those you are still in line to get your share of this system.

Stay warm and safe.

Time to think what’s on the agenda for this spring for the smokin, and grilling agenda when Mother Nature warms up a little.

We have a new winner at -24°.   Any other takers.

I remember doing a coldest Thread one time on Pelletheads, back when we were in Pasadena and I thought an overnight low of 41° was just ridiculous cold!  I remember seeing Members post some Thermapen and Maverick reading and I though...these are just make believe numbers!

I believe one time 3-4 years ago we had an overnight low of -9° here.  The most this year has been a couple of overnights in the high teens.

We finally have power and internet here south of San Antonio.  We didn't have power for 71 hours.  We set up camp in the living room and were able to keep it 59-60 in the house with a fire in the fireplace and all the other rooms shut off.  We probably had four inches of snow and the lowest I saw was 12 degrees.  I ran my generator to keep the fridge and freezer cold and we cooked on the gas cooktop.  We haven't lost water yet, thankfully.  Nothing compared to what y'all had but still mighty cold for this area.  It's going to be below freezing tonight and in the 60s and low 70s next week.  I hope.

I have been watching the fallout of the cold weather that is happening in Texas.  I have been ready to move south for years, I hate cold weather.  However, it would be my luck to make a big move and end up in the middle of something like this.  It is a big difference for areas prepared and set up with infrastructure for cold weather and those that are not.  Below 0 in the North is cold but not devastating because everything is built for it, move that same temp to an area where temps rarely dip below 40 and nothing is built for it.  I can see it would be devastating.  Best of luck, hope everything gets on track soon and the State will start working on the weak points that contributed to the issues.

Whoever the person at the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is who caused all of this sure did soil the sheets.  There will be all kinds of legislative investigations I'm sure.  The grid is made to combat extreme heat instead of cold I guess.  I heard on the local news yesterday that one of the head guys there said we were seconds away from a major statewide disaster and their decision to cut off power saved the whole state.  I find that hard to believe, but I bet ERCOT has a new CEO or whatever the title is soon.

Being in Dallas has been not been fun throughout this. We were very fortunate that the local power grid we are on is the same as a hospital across the road from us, so no power outage. Water has been okay to a point with some pressure drops so far. We did have a frozen pipe which I fixed before it thawed, so not a problem now. I think the coldest we got was 2* windchills in the -20 range, 6 inches of snow with some ice.

My biggest worries for the area is food, water and gasoline. It is almost non existent. Many of the folks here have been without power for days on end and now are facing thawing pipes as they get power or the temp rises. This will cause water pressures to drop due to the flooding aspect in homes, and water mains. Food and gasoline depend on it being delivered, which has not happened as the road systems are really not designed for this type of weather either.

The next problem will be repair supplies. Home Depot and many of the other large Boxstores and chains have ZERO plumbing hardware now. Sheet rock is becoming scarce very fast. Plumbers are gouging people left and right as well as saying that it will be late March before they may be able to slow down.

I can only hope and pray for everyone as this progresses as it will get worse before it gets better. I do have a swimming pool so if water becomes an issue I do have that as a source for toilets, and we can boil water to drink if needed.

Having lived in N.W. Wyoming myself and in the country, we as a family were prepared. To all affected by this, where ever you are, please be safe and courteous to your neighbors and to those that need help during these extreme times we are living through.

Peace to you all,
Mike

Looks like Tuesday is a magic day for a few of us.  I see central Texas will be in the mid 60's with sun and even warmer as you go south.  We are to be partly cloudy and 62 Weds, so really looking forward to that after a month where we have seen the sun 4 times!

We were fortunate and didn't get it as bad in NM.  Coldest temp we had was 10f at night.

Take care Mike

We are heading toward 60 on Tuesday as well here in NM.

Don't know what the wind chill is, but it is blowing like crazy here too.

Having spent four years in the upper peninsular of Michigan, I understand what you are going through. Stay warm and safe.

I am going to say something is wrong when the temps in the south central states are significantly lower than those of the north eastern states.  I don't know what it is, but this is the first I remember it happening in my lifetime.  It may be that I am a bit older now and I am paying attention to this, but I am guessing the stats will support my assessment too.

Maybe do some research on Solar cycles. This one is more like a 100 year event. ;)
