Title: Site Issues?
Post by: Bentley on February 26, 2021, 07:58:57 PM
Are folks having issues with certain text characters or text and adding photos?  I did on Weds., but have had no issues since.  I use Chrome and a PC laptop.

If you have had any issues can you post...and if you do have issues, tell what web browser you use please.

When I posted about Short Ribs a while back, I attached a photo, but all that came up in the post was a link. I use Safari.

No issues with pictures.
I did have an issue when pasting text,  from an apostrophe on did not get pasted.
Haven't tried it since.
The failure to connect still happens at times.

I use Pale Moon and Falkon browsers.

Was in the recipe section to refresh my memory of my rib recipe.  A couple of "A"s before measurements for the ingredients.
Using Google Chrome on my laptop.

I went back to the cast iron seasoning thread to read about how Canadian John made the beeswax pucks because I got some yesterday.  It looks like anywhere there is an apostrophe there are some weird symbols.  It's readable but it's not easy.  It's on the third page, but I copied and pasted it here to see what happens.

"This may help.

 The flaxseed oil must…
Be made of 100% flaxseed: There should be no other flavors, additives, and especially no oils to prevent oxidation among the listed ingredients. (You want the oxidation in this case!) The only exception here is
if the label includes the words “flaxseed particulate” or “lignans.” Those are still part of the flaxseed, so they’re fine and still count as pure flax oil.
Require refrigeration, because it’s an omega-3 supplement and goes rancid quickly. If you buy a bottle of flax oil that doesn’t need to be refrigerated, you bought the wrong thing.
Be organic, because “you don’t want to burn toxic chemicals into your cookware to leach out forever more,” Canter writes.
Be unfiltered, although filtered is also probably fine: Canter doesn’t specify if the oil should be filtered or unfiltered. I’ve heard of people using both, and it worked fine. The bottle she links to in her post is
unfiltered, so that’s what I went with as well.
Be expensive: Well, it doesn’t have to be expensive, per se, but if you’re buying the right thing, it probably will be. Think around $17 or $20 for a 16-ounce bottle.
Between it flaking off and the cost, I don't use it any more.. Some swear by it."

Using Chrome on a Windows 10 laptop.
Tried to go in and modify the posting for my home brew rib recipe.  After I saved the change (removing an upper case "A" that was somehow inserted) it totally removed everything that was below the change.  Have not tried adding the info that was deleted.

Your post is showing correctly, but the one I copied and pasted from the cast iron thread still has the symbols where quotes and apostrophes are when I looked at it just now.

EDIT:  I looked at it in Chrome and Edge and both still have the symbols.

Keto pizza dough.  You pre-bake it!  Then add ingredients to pie and cook.  Very curious to see what it looks like after 10 minutes at 490

Above post should say 490 (degree sign) .  About 410g of dough. and have a photo.

Was there a recent software upgrade that may be causing the issue now?  I've been using the degree symbol for years here without issues.

Since it all seems related to characters, maybe the default font changed and the code for the characters means something different.

Well, here is a test, Bentley.

My most common problem when posting is that an apostrophe ends the post.  I will retype my first line and make a contraction of "here is".  We will see if it completes.  (It is fine in Preview.)

Well, here's a test, Bentley.

EDIT:  Yahoo!  It displays properly.

British Pound Sign

EDIT:  The British Pound Sign ended the list.  Nothing after it posted.

Here's a list of the high-bit characters I most commonly use.  Not all are used on pelletfan.  It's what I tried to send in the above post.

The site was fine until about a week ago.  There must have been some change at your server or such.  I don't see why you have to hire someone to fix a problem that someone else caused.

Something else I found that had a problem with a change the service provider made but it was Finland so not sure if that matters or not.

Our service provider changed their database setup so that the default encoding is UTF-8. Our previous encoding was ISO-8859-1. This messed up those special characters we use here in Finland so i took a dump of the database and run it with iconv to convert those special characters. Now that did not go so well

True enough, BBL, but UTF-8 is the default character set for HTML5.  Why would anyone switch away from the default, as what apparently happened here?

Well, according to HostGator, SMF is not set up to read the UTF-8.  Not sure how that could be, I have used the (degree) symbol fine untill about 5 days ago.  I am hoping that at least that is the problem, and I will try and spend tomorrow not only seeing if I can get that issue fixed, but updating us ti the latest version of SMF.

If we go Dark, you all will know why!

I read several issues about going from 2.0.15 to 2.016.  Hopefully, you have a way to roll back to 2.0.15 if it doesn't go well.  I think they are on 2.0.18 now.

I do not know if it will correct old text or even if it is corrected.  I tried to update the site to the UTF-8.  I am not even sure it has done anything.  I just know I was having issues with the °, and that seems to be corrected. I do not even know how to make most of the symbols that Paul has posted.  So maybe he will be able to check tomorrow.

I will type these symbols in the same sequence as they appear on the list.  I will just string them together, 20 symbols on one line, comma separated.

But first, I will type an apostrophe, '

≈, "", ~, £, •, ¢, ©, °, ÷, …, —, –, €, ≥, ≤, µ, ≠, ±, ®, ™

EDIT:  Hooray!  All display properly.
