Mississippi Blues Marker Trail
« on: November 08, 2017, 09:41:57 PM »

Two years ago, I went to visit my mother-in-law in Clarksdale, MS, and drove around the state and found over 80 of the markers.  I go back down there again this Friday, and have 80+ more markers mapped out to hit over a week or so.

The 200th markers is being dedicated tomorrow at a site less than 5 miles from my mother-in-law.  Unfortunately, I found out about it too late and arrive the day after.  Would have been nice to see the dedication ceremony.  Some of you may remember the honoree of this marker.  It is for the song "Rocket 88".  The singer, Jackie Brentson, is buried in a cemetery in Lyon, MS near where the marker is being dedicated.

So, probably will not be checking in much the next week or so as I drive around in search of these markers, visit gravesites, museums, and other historic music sites including a John Lee Hooker exhibit at the Grammy Museum in Cleveland, MS.  It has been interesting seeing and reading these markers, along with plenty of books, on Mississippi Blues and how many of those musicians helped to influence rock and roll, and other modern day music.

Have you been to the one in Grafton and Port Washington?  I went to Grafton, but have not made it to Port Washington yet.  It has only been up for a few months.  Downtown Grafton was pretty neat with the piano key style sidewalk with their Walk of Fame on the keys.

I spent a week in Greenwood, MS back in '98 when I used to travel and do training.  I was at the Viking Range plant there.  I see there are quite a few markers in Greenwood itself but I did not know about them.
Did get to tour the battlefield in Vicksburg.

Happy travels friend!

I went to Greenwood two years ago to see a few.  I plan to see the 2 I missed then this Saturday.  Vicksburg is on the agenda for one day next week too.

Had to drive about 5 miles on a semi paved part gravel road to see the marker where Charley Patton was born today.  Day #1 in the books.  This is going to be a long week, but worth it when I am finished seeing all the sites.

My last visit for today was at an outlet mall south of Jackson, MS that had this marble statue of the trail.  It looked like they were missing the last 20+ locations though.  Anyway, I thought it was pretty neat looking.

It was 15-20ft tall.  The other side had the MS Country Music Marker Trail.  They only have about 25-30 markers as of now.

And, my wife and mother in law went to the unveiling of marker #200, the pre-concert and the reception and concert afterwards and had a great time.

Bo Diddley metal sculpture

Vine Brothers steak seasoning I found in the middle of nowhere.  Bought it cuz it had charcoal in it.  All of the talk of Tatonka Dust that I have never tried so I figured I will give this a shot.

I didn't know Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmy Swaggard, and Mickey Gilley were cousins until today.

I bought a numbered replica of this piece of art today.  There were 350 of them made of this BB King one.  I was at the art gallery of H.C. Porter who did a series of 30 Mississippi blues artists.  I found out there is an exhibit of them in Maryland January thru March.

I have now seen over 150 of the 200 markers on the trail.  Should see about 25-30 more before I head back home in a few weeks.

Drove about 25 miles on gravel roads yesterday to find to gravesites for Robert Johnson.  I saw the third (and what they now think is the official) gravesite two years ago.  Also, found the blues marker for the birthplace of BB King too.

Heading to the grammy museum today to visit the john lee hooker exhibit.

Went to see some live blues last night.  Bill Abel played in a small venue that holds about 50 people.  There were probably 30-40 there at one point.  He played for 90 minutes before taking a break.  We left at that time.  I wish he would have had this guitar with him when he played last night.

This is closer to what I witnessed last night.

One more trip left this Sunday to Oxford and Tupelo areas and some places on the way there.  Going to see all of the Elvis stuff in Tupelo.

Finished the last trip planned today - Tupelo, birthplace of Elvis.  The campus they have at his birthplace and home was pretty neat even without the museum exhibit being open.  The driving tour around town to sites of his childhood before he went to Memphis was pretty cool too.  Finished up driving through Ole Miss to the last blues marker of the trip.  I have now seen 178 of the 200 Mississippi Blues Trail Markers.
