Cleaning your pellet grill
« on: August 26, 2017, 10:34:48 PM »

Some grills are stainless, some are powder coated etc. Post how & what you use to clean your grill. My grill is completely stainless so I use bar keepers friend on the outside. I have two pellet grills, I have a Memphis Elite & a Memphis Pro, I use the Elite for the low & slow so I do not burn it off or clean the inside (except the cooking grates) cause I want the seasoning to stay, I foil my heat deflector... On my Memphis Pro I also use bar keepers friend on the outside, this grill is my high heat cooker for burgers, steaks, chicken, pizza etc... so this one I use high heat to burn off so I don't have any grease fires when I use it, I also foil the heat deflector.

I'm interested in the suggestions for SS exteriors.  Smoke-laden water condenses as it leave my PG500 and makes streaks on the front.  At first I thought it was grease, but grease-cutters won't remove it.  Creosote removers will if I scrub until I faint.

I've used Barkeepers Friend and a host of other mildly abrasive products.

On the other hand, I've said many time that scrubbing a pit provides scant return for the effort.  I've not heard of anyone becoming ill because a pit had a dirty exterior.

I am the one who mainly gets feed up with how the Memphis Pro looks and cleans it -- and that seems somewhat fair since he does 90% of the cooking on it.

It was really bad the other day -- just covered with grease and dirt since we forget to put the cover back on most of the time -- so I just looked around the kitchen for what I had and used Clorox "Cleaner plus Bleach" spray and a damp soft cloth.  Worked really well.  I needed a second damp soft cloth for "rinsing" and had to go over the surface with my "rinse" cloth a couple of times, but it was not only clean, but shiny too.  I am kind of like the father in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"  -- I go around spraying my Clorox spray on everything and it works most of the time!

Paul,

My PG looks very similar. I've been using (when I do it, once a year) a commercial product called Pro Force. I bought a 3 bottle pack with a sprayer head a few years ago at Sam's Club. It works well.

Grease lightning and a 3m pad.  Cleaned my pp1190 as lid and smoker stack cover of the nasty stains.

I've have very good results in cleaning my Advantage and MAK with KaBoom "Foam-Tastic". Spray it on, wipe it off.
Give it a try some time on your stainless. It seems to clean the smoke stains off very well.

I have seen Bentleys  "Pro". It is frightening.
When he arrived at a particular comp, I was certain that it wouldn't even run.
He did manage to get it fired up, though.
Amazing.

I would not use any cleaner that contains bleach. Bleach is very hard on Stainless and it will pit it.

I was thinking that, too, when I read Kristin's post.

See this information.

I don't think anyone would even notice on our Pro  :o

Yesterday I scrubbed my stainless steel PG500 with Kaboom.  (There's a bleach in there, probably chlorine.)  It does a really nice job on most stains.  I immediately followed it with SprayWay Stainless Steel cleaner to remove any bleach residue.  SprayWay leaves a slick coating that's easy to differentiate from areas not treated with it.

I like the results on the shelves and areas above the doors.  Below the doors where there are creosote streaks ... it's not perfect.

Queball recommended this from Sam's Club–

Has anyone else tried it on the creosote streaks?

I've used it on my grill and it worked great. Sprayed it on, let set for a few minutes and wiped off with a wet sponge.

It is strong and you will want to wear gloves.

Fast Eddy recommended it on the old site also.

The bottle didn't look the same, but had the same wording.  That is what I used on my PG500, and it got mostly everything. There were always a couple stubborn areas, but I just left it imperfect.

I don't know if you remember or not, but I had a post on pelletheads where I ran a bead of high temp caulk along the gap between the pg500 and shelf. That took care of about 90% of the stuff running down the front.
