Nothing like the crackle of a real fire, gas fireplaces are fine, more convenient, less messy but I prefer a wood fire.

Finally got enough seasoned wood split I feel comfortable it will get me to the beginning of the new year!

Bentley, is that really only a 90-day supply?

And, when you have a 20 acre overgrown forest next door owned by your uncles, the only cost is gas and diesel for the chainsaw, splitter and tractor.  And it is our exercise all fall and winter!

Heating with wood warms you twice.

pmillen -- not 90 days, that will last us about the 6 weeks until Jan 1.  We plan for a cord a month from Nov through Mar and then throw another cord in for safety.  I don't think we would need to burn as much, but Bonfire Boy likes these huge infernos going at all times the fire is lit.  The room got so hot the other night I had to go into the den to cool down -- and I usually keep the heat at about 60 when we have a fire, so that let's you know he was going through wood!!!

We may be going through more than a cord a month right now because Nov has been colder than average and there have been some days we have had a fire going all day.

I can look at pictures like that for a long while in amazement. You can see so far and so much. Not very many places like that here in the U.P. of Michigan.
A couple feet of snow and you would have a fantastic place to ride a snowmobile.

If it gets us to the 1st of the year I will be happy, 90 days, never happen!

Yeah, the Rivera Bermuda is dormant, so it looks kind of bad, the fields are fallow till May and the Blue Ridge call in the far background!

If it snowed here like it does there, that is one toy I would own.  I would think they would be a blast!

I didn't mean to imply it looks bad. When you are use to seeing one thing everyday, seeing something different is very cool.

You live in a beautiful part of the country, Bentley. That type of landscape calls to the part of me that enjoys rural America - my grandfather was a farmer in central Washington. Some of my most precious childhood memories are from my family's visits to the farmstead.

My wife's reaction would have been, "you posted a picture of our living room on the internet without cleaning up first?!"

Having grown up in a house heated with wood I can understand the large pile. It was an annual event helping my dad gather wood for the coming winter. Enjoy your fireplace while you can.  You would never get away with that in CA.  It won’t be long before the climate gestapo shut down wood burning fireplaces, stoves and, I hate to say it, pellet grills. In northern MN many people heat with wood. They have an enclosed burner outside the house that heats hot water that is piped into the house.
