Congrats!  I never carry credit card debt, but that darn mortgage will not ever seem to go away, and now my wife had to get a new vehicle, which will be payments for a while. Oh well, can’t take it with me when I go I guess.

I know that feeling well Bob, I payed off all of mine and my wifes in the spring. My Mom passed last year @91 years and left me a small amount of $$. I put it to good use. :) It's nice having a few dollars at the end of the month now. Funny thing how your credit score will escalate without any debt as well. We refied again and dropped our rates another 2% so all in all we have also reduced our mortgage :)

It's not fair, but without Credit Card or loan activity your score will drop.

I have not had a balance on a CC since 1992 after a divorce. It took 14 months to get it cleared up.  Have never had a month since that I ever carried a balance on them.  I also sold my home in 2000 and paid off the mortgage, FICO score went to 800+, but has sense settled in high 700's...so having debt does not really dictate the score.  If he quits using CC all together, that would be more of a factor to drop the score.

Being credit card debt free sure is a nice feeling. We still use credit cards on a daily basis but pay it off every month. Then paying off those college student loans a few years later felt good. Then driving around in cars that were paid off was nice too, although we still finance cars when we feel we need a new (to us) one. We still have a mortgage and probably will right up until we retire though.

Our credit report says it would be higher if we had more revolving credit or debt but I don't care. Having the highest credit report I can attain is not really in any of my financial goals, especially if that requires having more debt.

Well said all around.  Using a credit card daily allowed us to exchange our card miles for a flight to Hawaii the week after Christmas.  Then again I drive a perfectly functional 14 year old truck paid off 10 years ago.   Credit cards aren't really my hang up ... it's the debt free, financial independence absent a job that's the real goal.  That's still a decade away.  On the way I'd like to get my girls through college without loans.  A guy can dream ;)

I use credit cards for everything but haven't carried a balance for over 35 years, and my FICO score is 841.  Not having revolving debt may lower your score, but it won't kill it.

I think having a balance on the card every month and paying it off is more important than having a debt balance to your FICO score.
