Deal on Memphis Pro 300
« on: December 30, 2017, 08:46:22 AM »

I’ve been planning on getting a new pit and spending in the $1,200 range but just came across a Memphis Pro 300 being sold for $1,600 (2nd hand and possible room for negotiation).  Is this the type of deal you jump on and ask questions later?  Or just continue the evaluation process for a solid new $1,200 pit?  I’m asking out of ignorance and hope to learn something about value in this price range. Thanks!

How old is it?  What condition is it in?  Any know problems with it?  Any additional accessories added to it?

It’s a craigslist post and i haven’t responded to it yet so I’m not quite sure of the condition.  The exterior pics look nice.  No interior pics provided.  The description is lacking a bit but it says a searing insert is included.
Sorry for providing limited info but it’s all I really know about it so far. For the sake of sizing up the opportunity, let’s assume it is not in need of repair.

You really need to ask the Craigslist owner several questions as outlined by Bar-B-Lew.  Otherwise, you have no idea if it is a good buy or not.  If it is in good condition and just a couple of years old, that would be a great price.  But then, I would have to wonder why he was selling it for such a great price if it was fairly new and in really good condition.

You need to see it and turn it on...You need to see it run when it is not new.  Or trust the person 100%!

What's the "300" ?  I've never seen a number associated with the Memphis grill line.

I’m not sure what the “300” model indicates but that’s how the guy listed it and there is a picture of the label and serial number that says Memphis Pro 300.
I’m waiting for answers to the questions suggested in this thread. I greatly appreciate the guidance and suggestions from y’all.
This site is such a good resource and a fun place too.

The only meaning of "300" I can think of is 300 series class stainless steel. Memphis uses a 304 series. 304 is magnetic. The hood an all Pros is 400 series.

I would definitely look at it making sure to remove the inner parts. It's very easy to do. Then fire it up for a good 15 min or more...If the seller won't let you do that, walk away...

Memphis is good at answering questions and I am sure they will be able to help out..Certain things such as the build date and any improvements available...

Owners manuals are on line and have good info. They are serial # selective.

Good luck and I hope it works out..Happy New Year!

I thought the 304 was a better grade then the 403?  Mine is 304 and it will not hold a magnet...

Yeah, I would run from the deal if this happens...

Then fire it up for a good 15 min or more...If the seller won't let you do that, walk away...

400 series stainless is more costly as it has higher levels of chromium and nickel. Try the magnet any place other than the hood and handle that are both 404 series stainless. It will stick if 304...   If you look very closely (the grill must be clean)in good light

you should see that the hood (404 stainless) is marginally darker than the rest of the grill. :-\

I just went and looked at the PT on Pelletheads, it is 304, I think you may have metals backwards...cuz there is no place on my Memphis that a Magnet will stick!

As far as I know, Memphis offers 2 different SS options. 304 and 430. 304 is the better and more costly option. A magnet will not stick to 304 but may stick to 430 (not 100% sure).  I cook on a MAK 2 Star, and that is one thing that MAK boasts of....Marine Grade 304 Stainless Steel.  A magnet will not stick to the SS on my MAK, that I know for sure :)

What ended up happening with this?

Memphis Pro (post 2016 models) shipped with a manufacturer tag labeled "Memphis Pro 300"  That is a real Memphis Pro.  The way to tell if it is 430ss or 304ss (304 being a higher quality grade) *for what it's worth Marine grade SS is 316 and increases the amount of molybdenum, just an anti corrosion makeup for high salt regions* is to look at the Part #  VG0001S is the 304 cart and VG0001 is the 430 cart.  To the best of my knowledge both contain doors, grates and inner walls of 304 and then the 304ss cart upgrades the cart to all 304ss.
