Has Your Pit Been Stolen ?
« on: January 30, 2018, 04:33:40 PM »

I have not encountered the traumatic experience of a pit gone missing..It would be like loosing a family member..It is something I often wonder about.....My pits are out back and out of sight with exception of the neighbours on either side. That lessens the threat, or so I hope.

Are you concerned about theft or had a pit stollen ?

When we lived in the Arizona suburbs (both in the Phoenix and Tucson areas) I used to keep them locked down with a chain and a padlock.

Where we are at these days, no, they are stored in a shed like structure that I build on the corner of my deck.  We live "out in the woods" and the deck is in the back yard.  We have woods all around us and that part of our yard can't be seen unless you are already on our property.  We have 2 acres.

Nope mine is in the garage 100% of the time.  I have an elevated deck and can’t keep it there because I have to load it up on my pickup for competitions and I’m by myself so I do all my cooking in the driveway and have ramps to load it up.

Wouldn't say I'm concerned about it,  but I have thought about it. We live in a newer neighorhood, so alot of construction trucks, sub contractors, etc.  That means alot of eyeballs. We also live in the villa section. Lawn mowing services, landscapers, and general maintenance crews around all the time.

We're on 3 acres up in the Cascades and theft is pretty common around here (stoners) and theft has weighed heavily on my mind.   Even though I have cameras, my experience with the local sheriff's office is, unless you have a bonded, sanctioned notorized camera crew filming the entire sequence and a signed confession from the perpetrators, you're wasting your time calling it in.  But my pellet pooper is the least expensive cooker in my BBQ shack.   Have a couple of Kamado's in there also.   But, you better have lots of help to steal the big one.   Had to move it out there with my tractor front end loader.

Stealing my pit would mean taking it up a flight of stairs. My backyard is on a hill. It nearly killed me and the delivery guy to get it into the basement. If someone manages to steal it, they've earned it.

Didn't someone on PH once post that their pit had been stolen?  Just can't bring that memory into focus.

We don't have to worry too much here in Mayberry because Deputy Fife is on the job.

2nd story condo dweller here, so that's a no for me. If yer willing to risk putting up a ladder and huff an 80# smoker down it; you want it more than I do.

Like others, I may think of it from time to time, but I don't worry. It would take a Herculean effort on the perp's part. In my experience, most perps are lazy and want a quick nab. There would be nothing quick about taking my smoker.

I have not had a grill stolen, but someone did help themself to a portable fire pit that I had. It was in a very visable spot and much too portable I guess, so there really was nobody to blame but myself. However, that didn't keep me from being bummed.

Never had a problem. Although the housing here is close together, I have fairly high wooden gates and fences around my garden, and the smokers are to the rear of my garage and not in view of anybody except perhaps a neighbour.

If miscreants want to try to move my Lil' Tex, they are welcome to try. However, I've been thinking of chaining up my Davy Crockett. To my amazement, recent high winds managed to tip the smoker and the table it rests on completely over, so I've been looking at ways to fasten both the table and the smoker itself to the fence posts it backs against, to prevent it tipping again.

(Damage done only to the lid, as the thing fell front first on the handle, and bent the whole thing inwards. The grill still works, but leaks now. I've a replacement lid in the pipeline. The antenna is also very wobbly, but I am pretty sure I can fix that.)

Any of you old Mac users out there will relate to this...The first time I had a blank screen on my early SE, I got this really sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Long over that now, but that's how I think I would feel if someone stole my Smoker! It does come across my mind every so often, but I worry more about the Bobcat's getting my little Drake than someone stealing my Pellet Grill. And I live in the City.
