Meat score
« on: January 31, 2018, 09:06:52 PM »

So outside of Iowa and parts of Southern Minnesota I doubt many are aware of Fareway Food stores but their  a small Midwest chain and each location has a full service meat counter. What I have always found interesting is the meat market is actually a separate business from the store so that Manager can do whatever they see fit for their market so outside of normally good prices on items you will see great one off sales from time to time. This afternoon they put up the attached Facebook message and were selling short loins for 3.99/lbs!!

Needless to say I may have snuck out of work to hit them before the after work rush and there are now 13 monster vacuumed sealed steaks residing in my freezer

Do you know the grade? That's a good deal if it's choice or better. If it's select, it's not a great deal.

So, you can buy NY strip steaks for $4/lb regularly?

To be honest didn’t even look. In the  past their primal sales have always been choice. Marbling on the steaks was similar to past ones, I’m by no means a USDA grader but I’m quite happy with the quality.

I don't buy select, but I can regularly get choice t-bone/porterhouse for $4.75 on sale. And it's always on sale somewhere.  I bought a USDA prime strip for $8/lb a few weeks ago.

Where do you live that you get these great prices?

I live in the SF Bay Area. The $8 USDA prime strip was from Costco but I'm pretty sure that's similar to prices in their stores across the US.  The $4.75 choice t-bones are on sale right now at a local Safeway. What are you paying where you live?

I think $8 for select would be an on sale price.  If I found select for $4, I would probably buy $100 worth.

Wow. I knew prices varied across the US but had no idea the difference was that big.

For comparison 7.99/lbs is considered great around my area for anything in the meat case. Prime will net you $13-14.99 You will see choice at SAMs get to 5.99 on a rare occasion.

The best deal Fareway had on a short loin previously was $5.99.

I wish I would have seen this yesterday. I just called down there and they were all gone. Looks like I need to follow them on fb to catch the good deals.

You need to go pick up a 6-Pack of that Hopslam Ale, shown in that second ad, for when you BBQ!  Is a great IPA and is hard to come by!

2 six packs were secured the previous week when it was released! I feel spoiled these days that we can actually get it in Iowa. I spent quite a few years hitting up WI and MN to get some.
