I own a stubborn rough collie that can't stay away from my Traeger grease bucket when I'm cooking.  Grease does horrible things to a dog's digestive system.  I've had moderate success mixing in dish washing soap with the grease.  A Traeger rep at a big box store suggested ghost pepper in the bucket.  What do other folks do with their dogs?

 Not really sure. My last dog was a food hound that would lick up or grab anything that resembled food from anywhere, even the hot pit. The only way to prevent that was to be there constantly guarding...In your case a physical barrier of sorts could work, such as a framework of 2x4 lumber laced with cayenne pepper. Almost anything to block access and deter.  Would have to be of a solid nature to hold up to a big dog determined to eat.  A pit w/o a bucket such as a Memphis would do it for sure..Good luck.

I have never  had an issue.  I only have the bucket attached when cooking though.  I put it inside the grill and stuff a paper towel in the hole once it has cooled.

I have two Weimaraners that can smell a pheasant from 40 yards.  I know that they must smell the grease in the bucket but they ignore it.  It's not that they're picky eaters.  They eat mice, nest and all, when we're hunting.

I must be such a bad cook that they even reject the grease.

I am pretty much doing this now along with the soap in the bucket.  He does try to take the paper towel out with his tongue from time to time.

Maybe you can rig up a wire mesh top of some sort.

Make some type of chicken wire screen to protect the bucket. Could make 2x4 frame wrap with chicken wire and just place at the end off the grill when needed.

My golden retriever used to get into the grease bucket on my Traeger. On the FireCraft it is underneath and harder to reach. He never bothered it there though I imagine some dogs my be more persistent.

I use a jar to collect and toss when its about half. The bucket is kept in the grill when not in use and generally during a cook its way to hot for the dogs nose. Besides I growl louder than the dog when she gets too close...

This is honestly one of the reasons I bought a Memphis. Our dog will eat everything.
