Heavy smoke and white residue problem
« on: March 16, 2018, 10:42:43 AM »

The last two cooks that I have had on my grill both around 350 degrees for about an hour have produced a white film/residue on the inside of my grill.  In addition there has been a lot more smoke than normal at this temperture. The smell has not been that good, not the good wood burning smell.  I am using pellets that I have never used before (Cabela's).  I am thinking it is the pellets but not sure.  Could the grill be doing something different to cause this?  I have a Rec Tec if that matters.  Has anyone out there used Cabela's pellets?  What was your result?

I have several bags of Cabela's but have not used them yet.  It was my understanding that Lumberjack made them for Cabela's.  Try using another brand of pellets and see if you have the same issue.  It could be a number of things potentially causing the problem.  There is another thread about Camp Chef unit that had similar issues that you may be able to learn from even though it is not a Rec Tec.  Or, just call Rec Tec and get some advice from them.  They seem to be very customer service oriented based on feedback from others on here.

You may want to change the title to heavy smoke from a Rec Tec or something like that rather than pellet question to get more people to look at your specific problem especially Rec Tec owners/

My first thought from your description was how often do you clean your unit.  Some times when you run the higher temps you get some burn off of grease build up which cause more smoke and a smell.  Just a thought.

Happens a lot with grease on the drip pan.  I find that to happen when I make wings at about 250° for about 90 minutes and then crank up to 350° to get crisp sometimes.

I cleaned my grill before the first of these two cooks.  That included vacuuming the fire pit and insides and scraping the drip tray.  will have recheck maybe I missed something.  Talked to Rec Tec they are saying most likely itis the pellets if the grill is clean.

Which wood flavor pellets?  I’ve noticed this on my RecTec when using Lumberjack mesquite Blend pellets.

No white film but lots of white smoke.

Great minds and all that...1st thing that came to mind...It is self cleaning oven time!  Set it on high, it should start smoking at about 350° and continue on as it it hits max temp.  When it quits smoking the self cleaning process is over!
