Looking for: "Moist" Baked Bean Recipe
« on: May 25, 2018, 12:19:08 PM »

What I am after is a moist, tasty and soft baked bean recipe - NOT - using canned beans of any kind.... I've had them (the beans I am after) in a few places, one being a church supper. They are usually smaller sized beans due to what I believe is a long cooking process.

I would like the inside of the bean to taste like the flavourful liquid they were baked in..

Not all beans are created equal and would like to know what bean lends itself best to my requirements.

Any and all comments/recipes are welcome.

I do use a can but! I drain all the liquid off! 6 cans of beans liquid drained off, 1 pound of bacon cut up small cooked on the flat top. Remove bacon in the grease fry 1 onion chopped 1 green pepper chopped and 1 jalapeño  sliced . Add to beans. Add bbq sauce to cover the beans with half a can of crushed pineapple 1/2 cup brown sugar and some dry mustard. I put them on the smoker over night! Always a crowd pleaser!! Hope this is what you’re looking for! Hits all the taste buds Smokey salty sweet and a little heat

I also now use can beans because I have never had any luck using so call fresh beans that have not been cooked.  I have soaked them overnight and they are still like rocks when I go to cook them.  I have been told that unless you are able to really get fresh beans the this happens.

Plus 1 on the navy bean.

The only time I had problem cooking dry beans was at 3000 ft plus elevation. They took much longer due to the lower boiling point.

CJ, check your PM's. I'm sending a link to a recipe from Serious Eats. It's close to a recipe I've used and I think it would be what your looking for.

Is this something you want to only do on the smoker? I know there are some excellent Instant Pot bean recipes floating around, generally easy and quick since there is no soaking involved.

I sent you an email with some information on it for making the beans of your desire.  Hope it got there.  If it didn't, Bentley is it ok to post a u-tube video from another sight?

+1 for navy beans.  Great northern is second choice.  I soak beans overnight in salted water.  Instant pot is great if you use it often.  "Dutch's wicked beans" is a good recipe.  It uses crushed pineapple, bell pepper, molasses, Brown sugar, jalapenos.... All the church social ingredients.
I like um.

Thank you all so muck for your suggestions, comments and recipes. Urnmor's comment on the beans not being fresh hits home. I'll start w/ fresh beans and go from there..The recipes look good. Yes, I'll be doing the beans on the Memphis.

A video on youtube is fine.  A video that is posted on youtube that you have to go to another site to get?  That I do not understand...

It's just a u-tube video I downloaded the link from another site.   Did not want to violate any rules by reposting on this.   I sent him the link on an e-mail.   It sounded like what he was looking for.

The best baked bean recipe that I've ever tasted incorporated a can of apple pie filling. Search Google and you will find it.
