Rookie first butt cook.
« on: May 29, 2018, 10:14:03 AM »

.

Local Grocery Store had this butt (7 lbs) on sale for $4.50, 66% off so we said heck lets give it a try.

Wife made the rub.

180 for 2 hours
200 for 2 hours
250 until internal temp 160 verified with Thermostick
Wrapped then 275 until internal temp 195
pulled off grill and rested in a 150 degree oven for an hour, then pulled.

We really enjoyed it.

Looks good.  Did the probe feeling like a knife going through soft butter at 195°?

yes the probe went in easily in multiple locations.

Thanks to this forum for getting me off on the right foot.

The GMG Probe seems to be reading about 8 degrees low at around real temp of 195, but the Thrmostick saved the day.

Nice job!  I have never tried resting it in a 150 oven.  I usually place it (still foiled) in a large cooler and pack w some swim towels to rest.

Looks good with a good smoke ring!  Does your GMG have WiFi?  I was able to get my probe calibrated to within a couple degrees of my Maverick probe.

Nice job, shadco.  It doesn't look like rookie work.  Now, do your favorite meatloaf recipe.  From then on you'll always want them from the pit.

You had to mention that. ;)

There are a lot of good pointers in this forum which helped me pick the gmg and also how to cook the butt. I had a medium green egg but didn’t have confidence in its run time or my ability to manage it, I would have loved to get a YS460 but it’s too large for this old fart to deal with and there are only 2 of us.

We eat lots of meat loaf.
