Corn Cob Pelelts?
« on: July 30, 2018, 08:29:25 AM »

Stumbled upon this thread over on Smoking Meat Forums where they talk about using Corn Cob pellets for smoking:

In terms of flavor it sounds like they work well and could be really interesting, but this user specifies the Amazen pellet smoking device, so they are only being used for smoke, not heat. I haven't been able to find any reference to using them in a pellet grill. Has anyone used corn cob pellets in a pellet grill, and what was your experience?

I remember there being a performance test completed on a unit that used corn cob pellets as fuel and flavor.  I don't remember anything about it though.

Corn as a heating fuel tried to get established about 20 years back. The heaters were somehow different than those used for pellets and never caught on. One of the negatives was was using food as fuel. It didn't go over well ..Evidently burning corn kernels has a corn smell to it... Cobs have been used for years in place of smoker wood. Has a nice mild flavour.
Never tried burning corn of any configuration in my pellet pits.

The Cornglo Model 527 used CORN kernels OR wood pellets...I have never seen corn Cobb's used to make pellets.  I guess if all you are looking for is heat to cook or grill and hardwood smoke is not a factor it would be a good alternative.  Where do you get the cobbs, that would be my question?

I tried to post a link, looks like it didn't work. Here you go:

A few years old but I checked and Tractor Supply still carries these. 100% corn cob, the guy in the post above vouches for their flavor but as I said, he just used them in an Amazen smoking device, not a pellet grill with an auger etc. where the pellets are providing the heat. Just curious how they burn in a grill if anyone has used them.

Our local pellet manufacturer has  3 grades of pellets:" Premium Hardwood", "Standard" and "Animal Bedding". That may shed some light on the quality of the pellets... The animal bedding pellets don't

meet the quality certification standards of good heating pellets.
