Another Slightly Political Message
« on: October 30, 2018, 09:10:08 AM »

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

I know I am being a bit sexist, and this post applies more to women than men, but I think the sentiment of sacrificing for the right to vote is universal.  I want to encourage everyone to vote next week, even if you feel turned off by the current state of politics.

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-Grandmothers who lived only 100 years ago. Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote. Prior to that, they picketed the White House for the right to vote. The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing.

And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.

When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'

Sometimes voting feels more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it is inconvenient. Sometimes, the whole process is dispiriting. But please remember -- hundreds of thousands of men and women have suffered and died over centuries to maintain our privilege to vote. We honor their memory and sacrifices when we take the time to pull whatever lever we choose -- yes, we CHOOSE -- in the ballot box. Please vote on Nov. 6

I had never heard that story before.  Thanks for sharing.  While there is unfortunately still a great share of crazy things that happen in our world, we have come quite a way from how that situation was handled.  Crazy to think what our grandparents and great grandparents went through.

Indeed; well said.  One of the most important rights we have as Americans is to have our voices heard by voting. I am dismayed by the voter apathy we see in these challenging times.

I vote, but it is disheartening to what seems like more and more, "to vote for the lesser of 2 evils".

I'll add that voting in ignorance is as bad as not voting, so it's our obligation to separate the wheat from the chaff, information wise, and make the best decision based on the facts.

This is the main reason why I stopped being tied to a political party 30 years ago. I truly believe people tend to vote party lines no matter how crooked/stupid/dumb/unfit the candidate is.

you all really need vote by mail.  The wife and I voted last Saturday, in our pajamas, together, with the voters pamphlet and a smart phone to search any items we were unclear on.  Took maybe 45 mins.  We only canceled each other out on two of approximately 15 votes :)

I'm not saying we've made a game of voting, but we do enjoy talking through the issues and the candidates and voting together at our leisure.

Thank you Kristin. I never heard of this and I'll be 62 in a few months.

I too find it discouraging. We have vote by mail here in WA and I don't care for it. The last election we had, the State said more people voted than ever before. Why? Because the return postage on the ballot was paid for with our taxes. Ya know what? If ya won't buy a stamp, you shouldn't be voting. No, that's unconstitutional. I get it. What it shows is how little regard folks around here have for the process and what's happened to assure it continues.

Makes me sad every time I fill out a ballot. If you don't live here, you have no idea what's been happening over the last 20+ years. And it continues to get worse every day. Every day you ask? Isn't that a bit overblown?

No. Every day.  :'( >:(  :puke:

It probably depends on where you live.  In California, all you had to do was request an absentee ballot.  In Las Vegas, I could vote electronically at the supermarket a week before the election -- but I could also play the slots at the supermarket! In Virginia (or at least this county), you have to provide a verifiable excuse as to why you cannot go to a polling place on election day in order to get an absentee ballot.  Since I am retired, I don't have too many excuses! And we don't receive any type of voter pamphlets -- all research has to be done by the individual.

As to my lament... THAT would require some effort on the voters part. Oh the Horror!
Sadly, it's far to easy to vote today in many places. All ya gotta do is get mesmerized by the MSM, fill out the ballot, and stroll to yer mailbox. There's no thought process involved. It's like Pavlov's dogs.

Where does one get certifiable information these days? It doesn't exist for either side of the spectrum.

I've quoted this (from the Point by Harry Nielson)... "you see what you want to see, and you hear what you want to hear" (the Rock Man). It's a great album and video.

If we don't encourage differing ideas we are doomed. At this time, there is no civil discourse.  <sigh>
