Here in Sun Lakes, AZ it is predicted to be mostly clear and 41°. I have a pretty good Nikon point-&-shoot camera that I will give a try.

An unusual thing will happen to the moon this month.
  • On the night of the 20th to the 21st, the full moon will be as close to the earth as it ever gets, so it will appear to be unusually large.
  • It will also pass into the Earth’s shadow, creating a total lunar eclipse.
  • It won’t be illuminated by direct sunlight as it usually is.
  • We will still be able to see it because it will be illuminated by sunlight that is refracted by the Earth’s atmosphere.
  • The refracted light will cause it to be red.

Actually, it will be closest on the blood moon of 2034. about 221,000 miles, as opposed to 252,800 mi. at its farthest.  Here is pics of difference in appearance of size.

Thanks for the correction.  It proves to me once again that even professional writers aren't always precise in their writing.  The way the information I read was written, I interpreted it to mean that the moon would never be closer, when the writer actually meant that it was the closest when compared to all previous blood moons.

That kind of slipshod writing angers me and I constantly see/hear it.  My cardiologist says I'll always have angina if I don't let those things go.

The downside—my heart medicine makes me kinda' dopy and I make writing mistakes.

Don't fuss over it.  This is not a scientific journal. I tend to be a nitty picky person even when it is not necessary, and even when I am totally misinformed. I had my double bypass 3 years ago (at age 80---not a good time), but have had good results to date.  No angina, so I am lucky.  Best wishes and stay cool.

It is supposed to be clear and cold here Sunday night.  I am trying to talk my neighbor into lighting his gas firepit for a Moon viewing party.  The problem is we are all old and we go to bed early.

Take a nap earlier and set the alarm to wake up for the show ;D

Here in AZ the show starts at 7:30 and is over by 11:00, no need to stay up late.

Isn't the first night tonight?  Our chances of seeing anything are pretty low.

You are correct.  I jumped the gun.  There will probably be an icicle hanging from it tonight.  I think the forecast is -20 wind chill here this evening.
